Lišov between Masks, Wine and Traditional Architecture

Lišov combines an unusually diverse collection culture with viticulture, historic architectural forms and a signposted cycling route. Here you can see international mask art, learn about traditional crafts, discover cellars carved into volcanic tuff and choose a 24 km route between Dudince, Tesárska roklina and Lišov. The individual sites and activities make Lišov particularly interesting for travellers who want to combine culture and active pursuits in a smaller Slovak local landscape.

Museums, Masks and Historic Architectural Forms

The Galéria masiek displays more than 400 masks from around the world. The collection includes African, Asian, modern European, American and local masks, making it more than a regionally limited exhibition. The Lišovská izba offers a different way to explore the local history as a small ethnographic museum. There you can see and try out traditional work and crafts yourself.

The Keltské obydlie illustrates traditional skills and the use of natural materials. The wooden building has walls made of interwoven hazel rods plastered with clay and was built without a single nail. It was created by exchange students from England, Romania and Germany during a stay in Lišov and can be visited as an example of this construction and working method.

The Protestant church is also one of the village’s historic points of reference. It is said to have been built in 1590; its present organ dates from 1922. Stodola Fera Liptáka is located in a house with preserved traditional architecture, where exhibitions are held. Visits are possible by prior arrangement.

Viticulture and Stone Dwellings

The Vínne chyžky in Lišov include around 300 wine-growing cottages and hand-carved cellars cut directly into volcanic tuff. Koštovka, a competition for the best Lišov wine, has been held every spring since 1994. This gives viticulture in the village a recurring cultural occasion in addition to its visible cellars.

The stone dwellings represent a special form of local history. They include small rooms and large halls carved into cavities and caves in sandstone and tuff. These dwellings probably date from the time of the Turkish incursions and served as refuges for the inhabitants. The cautious historical classification remains part of their traditional significance.

Cycling Route, Stream Meanders and Local Information

The Lišovská cycling route runs for 24 km from Dudince to Tesárska roklina, through Lišov and back to Dudince. Along the route, you can see the meanders of the Lišovský potok. Those exploring Lišov by bicycle thus have a clearly described connection between the named starting and ending points, the gorge and the village.

In the lower part of Lišov lies Hbôl - perisko, a mildly mineralised spring that does not freeze in winter. The Regional Information Point of Lišov is available for initial orientation in the village. It is located in a renovated house dating from 1887 and serves as an information centre and café.
