Hontianske Tesáre lies on the southwestern edge of the Krupinská planina. The Štiavnica stream flows through the municipality, while the international E77 road passes through the village, connecting Budapest and Warsaw. For your travel planning, the village combines natural formations, viewpoints, sacred buildings, archaeological traces and a viticultural tradition reaching far back into the past.

Gorge, Waterfalls and Protected Nature

The Tesárska roklina is a short canyon in predominantly volcanic sediments originating from the Štiavnica stratovolcano. Its cross-bedding documents chaotic sedimentation typical of river deltas and suggests that this area was once a shallow sea. There are four waterfalls in the gorge; the third upstream is about 8 metres high. The waterfalls are particularly visible in spring during the snowmelt.

The footpath to the Tesárska roklina begins at the Hontianske Tesáre railway station. The route along the railway line is also suitable for bicycles, providing a clearly described alternative to exploring on foot. Another marked trail leads from the municipal office to the observation tower. The route, approximately 1.5 kilometres long, initially follows an asphalt road and then a field path. The observation tower is open to visitors and offers views of Hontianske Tesáre and the wider surroundings of the Hont region.

In the Šinkov salaš nature reserve, the focus is on observing nature. The area protects the rare and endangered spring pheasant's eye, Adonis vernalis, a protected plant species in Slovakia. A population comprising several thousand specimens grows there on formerly mown mountain meadows and along the edges of oak forests. Šinkov salaš is subject to the fifth level of nature protection.

A fossil site is also located in the Dvorníky cadastral area of the municipality of Hontianske Tesáre. Water erosion exposes layers of marine sediments there. The exposed fine-grained sandstone layers contain numerous fossils.

Sacred Buildings and Traces of the Past

On a small hill in the Hontianske Tesáre–Dvorníky cadastral area, in the Patkôš district on the right bank of the Štiavnica, stand the remains of the Romanesque Church of St Michael. The church belonged to a series of sacred buildings that once lined the important imperial-royal postal road Magna Via. It was built in the 12th century and fell into disrepair in the 19th century. Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque construction phases have been identified archaeologically.

Local tradition also preserves notable personalities and historical evidence. Karol Braxatoris was an Evangelical pastor in Hontianske Tesáre and is buried there. He was a religious writer and author of hymns. Archaeological finds point to continuous settlement in Hontianske Tesáre from the hillfort period through the Middle Ages. The village's folk costume is preserved only in photographs; in addition, a coloured print by J. Heinbucher-Bikkesy from 1816 depicts the costume of women and girls from Hontianske Tesáre. The amateur theatre in Dolné Šipice was already active in the 1920s.

Hontianske Tesáre has an Evangelical church designed as a single-nave hall church with a tower dating from the late 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, it was remodelled in the Neoclassical style. Šipice is home to an Evangelical church from 1801, a Classical building with a free-standing bell tower. The Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Šipice was originally Gothic and dates from the second half of the 14th century; it was remodelled in the Baroque style from 1722 to 1728.

The ruins of the Hostinec na Patkôši inn are located in the Patkôš settlement and are associated with the poet Sándor Petőfi. The Tesárske dúpence are rock chambers approximately 5 to 6 metres in size and 180 to 200 centimetres high. They probably served as hiding places for local residents fleeing the Turks. Their approximate dimensions and cautious historical classification form part of the special character of this place.

Viticulture and Regional Culture

Numerous cellars carved into the rock have been preserved in Dvorníky; they were used to store wine. Viticulture in Hontianske Tesáre reaches far back into the past, and Stráne in Dvorníky is the municipality's largest wine-growing area. In the past, Hontianske Tesáre had a custom of combining wine after the harvest and giving it to the pastor.

Hontiansky jarmok and Gulášmajster 2026 is a cultural and social event dedicated to preserving, presenting and promoting the traditional culture of the Hont region. The event combines fairs with a goulash-cooking competition, which will be held in Hontianske Tesáre for the 19th time in 2026. Visitors can take part in creative workshops focused on traditional skills such as textile techniques, blacksmithing, wax candle making and bobbin lace-making.
