Čekovce lies east of Krupina in a valley through which the Čekovský potok flows before joining the Krupinica. Its location combines a clearly defined landscape with a rich local history. The church, memorials, folk architecture and former livelihoods bring this history to life in different ways. If you are looking for a place on your trip to Slovakia whose character can be understood through both its landscape and its historical traces, Čekovce offers several specific points of interest.

The Valley and the Village Scene

In the centre, a relatively cohesive group of surviving houses with typical elements of folk architecture forms a distinctive part of the village scene. Houses featuring these characteristics from the early 20th century have been preserved in Čekovce. Looking at these architectural forms adds a historical perspective to the geographical orientation: the village is shaped not only by dates, but also by the houses passed down through the years.

The Church and Commemorative Culture

The church of Čekovce is located in the centre. The first Holy Mass was celebrated there in the autumn of 1923; the church tower was completed in 1925. These two dates mark different stages: the first Mass was followed two years later by the completion of the tower. The village erected a cross in the cemetery in 1895. The memorial to those who fell in the First World War in Čekovce was erected in 1936. The years 1895, 1923, 1925 and 1936 anchor different stories of remembrance and church history across several decades.

A memorial room presents the history of life and the cultural heritage of the village and its residents. An older house owned by the municipality was renovated and partially reconstructed in 2014. The village’s history thus encompasses memorial sites and church development as well as the history of municipal buildings.

History, Work and Bzovík

The early history of Čekovce is linked to the provostry of Bzovík. The monastery in Bzovík represents a different architectural scale: surviving features include a Gothic sacristy that was converted into a chapel, fortifications with corner towers, and a visible moat. Compared with the houses and memorials in Čekovce, sacred architecture and fortifications come together there. This broadens the perspective on regional cultural history with another form of historic architecture.

The palaeontologist Jozef V. Luňaček was born in Čekovce in 1844. While teaching in Krnišov, he became interested in geological research. Hemp cultivation was also among Čekovce’s historic livelihoods; in earlier times, men practised woodcarving. The village’s history thus brings together biographical, scientific, agricultural and craft-related themes.
