Hontianske Nemce: Educational Trail, Churches and Cultural Landscape

Hontianske Nemce combines a waterside landscape with distinctive sacred buildings and a clearly described educational trail. The village lies in the valley of the Štiavnica River, in front of the Štiavnické vrchy, the young volcanic mountains of the Slovak Central Mountains, and the Krupinská planina. Different landscape settings therefore meet here, while cultural monuments and trails provide specific places to visit during your trip.

Educational Trail to Koháryho dub

For a hike, the Koháryho dub educational trail leads from the primary school in Hontianske Nemce to the protected Koháryho dub tree. The trail is 3.8 km long, with a stated walking time of 1.5 hours. Its destination lies in the cadastral area of the municipality of Kráľovce-Krnišov. This precise route makes the educational trail an independent way to explore the surroundings of Hontianske Nemce on foot, without equating the hike with a longer route.

When planning your walk, pay particular attention to the route: The first 740 metres follow a state road. This section is part of the documented route and therefore differs from the character of the rest of an educational trail. If you would like to visit Koháryho dub, you should take this information into account when planning your own route. The protected tree is not only a destination, but also the reference point after which the educational trail is named.

Churches and Historical Works of Art

The village’s defining building is the parish church dedicated to Saint Martin. It was built in the first half of the 13th century as a three-nave Romanesque basilica. A fortified wall surrounds St Martin’s Church. Its present appearance combines several construction phases: Gothic elements were added later, the chancel and sacristy were built in the Renaissance style, and the tower is Baroque.

The Mariánsky stĺp stands in the park and dates from the second half of the 18th century. The column is designed in the Rococo style and bears a statue of the Madonna, Mary Help of Christians. A renovation is recorded for 1899. The Súsošie Kalvária is located beside the church cemetery. This ensemble dates from the first half of the 19th century and combines Classicist and Baroque elements. It consists of five free-standing sculptures: three crosses with the Crucified, along with statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist.

The Church of Saint Urban and Saint Donatus also stands in the Vinice district. It underwent extensive Baroque restoration in the late 17th or early 18th century. For visitors interested in culture, this creates not one unified individual monument, but rather a local coexistence of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicist and Rococo elements.

Pilgrimage, the Mill and Local Tradition

Hontianske Nemce is a pilgrimage site of Our Lady of the Scapular on the Central European Marian Route. The Slovak section of this Marian route can be walked in both directions. This additionally places the village within a cross-border religious route context, without requiring a specific stage length.

The Pavol Turčan Water Mill is regularly open to the public. Its building houses the ethnographic Nemčianské múzeum. The mill and museum therefore represent two interconnected cultural points of interest in the same location. The traditional Nemčianske fašiangy are regarded as a symbol of joy and abundance. At Nemčianske fašiangy 2025, there was a cheerful procession through the village with an accordion, singing and music. This specific event belongs to the past and describes the documented form of the celebration in 2025.
