Poniky: Churches, Karst and Folklore

Poniky combines sacred history, vibrant folk culture and a distinctive karst landscape. Culture between Church, Exhibition and Folklore

Ponický dom houses a permanent exhibition on the folklore and cultural history of Poniky. The same building also contains an authentic exhibition about the writer and poet Štefan Žáry. Here you can encounter both the traditional ways of life handed down in the area and a specific literary personality. Local tradition includes numerous customs that have survived to this day. The Poničan folklore ensemble and a children's folklore ensemble present these traditions.

Music, too, preserves its own regional character. In the Poniky area, the fujara and six-hole shepherd's flutes have survived to this day. The fujara is decorated with engravings and burned-in ornaments. This cultural picture is complemented by the long tradition of making household textiles. Those interested in regional culture will therefore find several different points of access in Poniky: an exhibition, living folklore, instruments and craft traditions.

The sacred history extends from the Middle Ages into the more recent past. A church in Poniky was built in the first quarter of the 14th century and features frescoes with Franciscan motifs from two main phases, around 1380 and in 1415. The church can be visited free of charge by prior telephone arrangement. The Poniky parish also includes the branch church of Panny Márie Fatimskej from 1945, as well as the chapels of Najsvätejšej Trojice from 1846 and sv. Jána Nepomuckého from 1960.

Another ecclesiastical monument is the Evangelical church from 1784, with a Tolerance Tower dating from 1868. The Vodný mlyn Jána Mračka water mill is designated a national cultural monument. Together with the exhibitions and preserved customs, these sites form a cultural profile that extends far beyond a single building.

Karst Landscape and Independent Routes

The Ponický kras lies west of Poniky and covers an area of approximately 4 km². In and around Poniky, there are karst phenomena such as sinkholes and blind valleys. The NPR Ponická dúbrava National Nature Reserve is home to sessile oak, which grows in challenging terrain. Poniky is also considered an important mushroom-picking area. The landscape therefore cannot be reduced to a mere backdrop: karst formations, woodland and the traditional use of the surrounding area are among the different facets of the place.

For a concrete hiking decision, the Hradisko educational trail provides clear details. The loop is 2.3 kilometres long, moderately difficult and takes approximately 1.5 hours. It is self-guided, accessible to pedestrians year-round and can be walked in either direction. You are therefore not choosing a guided excursion, but an independently accessible loop trail with a defined length and approximate duration. For cyclists, the green cycle route 5558 runs from Ponická Huta via Poniky to Šalková.

Events with a Regional Connection

The cultural year includes the children's folklore festival “Zdola ponickýho mlyna”; its 28th edition is documented for 13 June 2026. Cycling is also represented by the “Ponickými kiarmi” hill climb. It was held for the tenth time on 13 September 2025; the 11th edition is scheduled for 2026. The two events represent different sides of Poniky: passing folklore on to children and a sporting engagement with the landscape.
