Smolenice: Caves, Castles and Karst Landscape

Smolenice combines nature experiences in the karst with castle history, archaeology and a distinctive culinary tradition. Here, you can choose a self-guided educational trail through the landscape, visit a cave open to the public, explore historic fortifications or immerse yourself in the world of mead at Včelovina. The sites differ significantly in character: some paths lead through protected landscapes, while the castle and museum provide insights into the history of the Little Carpathians.

Karst Landscape and Trails Around Smolenice

The Náučný chodník Smolenický kras is an easy, year-round, self-guided hiking trail. It is 4.5 kilometres long, climbs 230 metres in elevation and passes eight stations. The route is estimated to take about 1.5 hours to walk. It connects Jahodník with Jaskyňa Driny, Vlčiareň, the Hlbočianska dolina and the Vrtichov quarry in Smolenice.

Jaskyňa Driny is the only publicly accessible cave in western Slovakia. It lies in the Smolenický kras in the Little Carpathians, southwest of Smolenice, near the Jahodník recreation centre, and is located within the Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. The visitor route inside the cave is 450 metres long and takes about 35 minutes. From the car park at Jahodník, an approximately one-kilometre-long forest path leads to the cave. The route climbs around 100 metres in elevation and takes approximately 20 minutes to walk.

West of Smolenice lies the Dolina Hlboče, a canyon-like valley with exposed rock formations, karst features, a waterfall and large potholes. The valley can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail. At the end, there is a waterfall that carries water only at certain times. Dolina Hlboče was designated a nature reserve in 1981 across an area of 123 hectares and has been a national nature reserve with the highest level of protection since 1995. Since 1994, the protected summit area of the Little Carpathians has also included Záruby, the highest mountain in the range at 768 metres, as well as Čelo, Ostrý Kameň and Veterlín.

Castle, Hillfort and Local History

Present-day Smolenický zámok was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the ruins of a castle constructed in the mid-15th century. Count Jozef Pálffy began building the present castle on the ruins of the old castle. During visits, only the lower courtyard is accessible. This restriction is an important part of the visitor information and distinguishes the castle from a site with fully accessible interior tours.

Hradisko Molpír is a hillfort of the Kalenderberg culture covering an area of 12 hectares. The site is divided into three areas: two outer baileys and an acropolis. Parts of the fortifications, a gate, a cult object and a cistern have been restored and are presented to visitors. Information panels along the educational trail explain the individual features, allowing visitors to understand the structure of the site through its archaeological stations.

The Múzeum Molpír is housed in the building of the former parish house. It displays finds from the Hallstatt-period Molpír hillfort, an exhibition section about Štefan Banič, historical books from the 17th to the 19th century, the history of the village, the flora and fauna of Smolenice and its surroundings, minerals, and the ethnography of the area. For technical reasons, the museum is closed until further notice.

Mead at Včelovina

The Včelovina visitor complex lies below Smolenický zámok. There, you can take part in a guided tour of mead production with a tasting of three meads. A guided tasting of nine mead varieties is also available. Schoolchildren can join educational excursions featuring hands-on activities, where they learn about different types of flowers, the work of beekeepers and life inside a beehive. In this way, Včelovina complements Smolenice’s landscape and cultural attractions with an insight into regional beekeeping and mead production.
