Boleráz: Churches, Hilly Landscape and Water Reservoir

Boleráz lies in the Trnavská pahorkatina, about 14 km northwest of the district town of Trnava. The village combines a multifaceted cultural landscape with notable historical landmarks and a water reservoir that is important not only for recreation but also for flood protection. For deciding whether to travel here, the changing landscape areas are particularly interesting: Boleráz is not situated on a uniform plain, but encompasses different forms of hilly and undulating terrain.

Landscape between Hills and Plain

The northern part of the cadastral area belongs to the Podmalokarpatská pahorkatina and displays the characteristics of a lowland hilly landscape. In the south, by contrast, the Trnavská tabuľa is characterized by an undulating plain landscape. The Trnávka stream runs through Boleráz’s unforested area in a flat, broad valley. These three landscape elements – hilly terrain, open plain and valley – give the village a clear geographical character and make it evident how varied the surroundings are within the cadastral area.

The Boleráz water reservoir was built in the 1960s. Its dual importance is explicitly documented: it serves recreational purposes while also fulfilling a flood-protection function. Water sports are another activity associated with Boleráz; conditions on the water surface are considered very good for this purpose. The reservoir expands Boleráz’s predominantly cultural and historical attractions to include recreation by the water and conditions for water sports that are considered very good.

Churches and Traces of the Past

Boleráz is home to the parish church of Saint Michael the Archangel. The foundation stone of the present-day church was laid on 1 May 1786, and construction work was completed on 15 September 1787. Inside, the main altar is dominated by a statue of Saint Michael the Archangel slaying a dragon. The church thus combines a precisely dated construction history with an immediately striking visual motif.

Another church-history landmark is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Klčovany (Boleráz). It is a Baroque single-nave church with an integrated tower and was restored in 1856. The older settlement history reaches back even further: At Hradisko Zámok, about 1 km southwest of Boleráz, there was a fortified settlement around 1500 BC with a rampart, palisades and a pointed ditch. In addition, Boleráz contains at least five settlement sites associated with the Boleráz group.

Traditions and Local Orientation

The regular cultural calendar includes the traditional “Pochovávanie basy” before the beginning of Lent and celebrations for the feast of Saint Catherine. Alongside the enduringly preserved church and settlement traces, these events represent a vibrant local tradition. The TJ Slavoj Boleráz sports complex includes a football pitch and other sports facilities, adding a local sporting dimension to the picture of the village.
