Šelpice Between Cultural History and Cycling Route

Šelpice is located 6 km northwest of Trnava. The village combines a manageable setting with a remarkable number of traces of church, local and settlement history. Particularly distinctive is the Neo-Gothic Church of Christ the King on the cemetery grounds. It was built from 1939 to 1946, dates from 1946 and was consecrated in November 1946. This makes it possible to clearly trace the history of its origins through a single building.

Church, Monuments and Local Culture

The cemetery in Šelpice is also home to a statue of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. A stone cross with a depiction of the Passion of Christ and a statue of the Virgin Mary dates from 1894. On the bridge over the Trnávka towards Bohdanovce, a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1907 commemorates the village’s religious character. The Šelpice monument to those who fell in the First World War dates from 1928.

The regional culture of crafts and associations is also part of Šelpice’s history. A Gatrová embroidery featuring a peacock motif from Šelpice dates to the 1930s. The village was formerly known for its embroidery art. The DOLINA singing group was founded in February 2014 and enriches Šelpice’s cultural events. It occasionally also sings in the church of Šelpice. In this way, traditional crafts, choral singing and sacred sites come together in the village’s history.

Archaeological Depth

The history of the area extends far beyond the visible buildings. The cadastral area of Šelpice was already intensively settled towards the end of the Paleolithic. Finds from the Neolithic and subsequent cultures make Šelpice an important archaeological site. An archaeological settlement object was assigned to the Lengyel culture (5000/4700–4000 BC) based on movable finds. At the Nad Gajdárovou archaeological site in the cadastral area of the neighboring municipality of Šelpice, a fragment of the handle of a glass skyphos was also found; it is dated as an import from the Early Imperial period. These finds give the village’s history a chronological depth that extends from prehistory into the Early Imperial period.

Cycling Route and Recurring Events

For active exploration, the “Z Trnavy do Smoleníc a späť” cycling route passes through Šelpice. It is considered moderately difficult and has moderate climbs. A public cycling event was also held at the pump track in Šelpice.

A regular annual event of its own is the traditional raising of the maypole. It takes place every year on 30 April at 18:00 by the cultural center; for 2026, it was announced at this location.
