Žabokreky Nad Nitrou

Žabokreky nad Nitrou combines a diverse cultural landscape with rural experiences and a marked cycling route. The village lies in the northeastern part of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina, on the right-bank floodplain and terrace of the Nitra River. Both the railway and several historic buildings are important for orientation: single-track railway line no. 140 runs through Žabokreky nad Nitrou in the direction of Nové Zámky–Nitra–Prievidza, and the village has a railway station.

Historical Traces and Notable Buildings

Archaeological finds document settlement in Žabokreky nad Nitrou in the 7th and 8th centuries. During the period of Great Moravia, local blacksmiths produced complete sets of agricultural tools. These indications point to the village’s long history of development, which can be seen concretely in several buildings.

The Church of Our Lady is a Secession church built in 1913. It was constructed in place of a demolished Romanesque church from the 13th century. The single-nave building has a polygonal presbytery termination and side chapels. Its design combines Renaissance and Neo-Romanesque elements with the Secession style; the interior furnishings date from the time of construction.

Another historical landmark is the fortified Kúria of Žabokreky nad Nitrou. It was originally a Gothic watchtower built around 1320, which was converted into a residential building in the 20th century. Two phases of earth fortification have been identified at the site, broadly dated to the 11th–13th and 14th–16th centuries. The western section of the outer fortification with its moat has been preserved. The Kúria therefore represents not only a single building but also the different developmental phases of its fortification.

The Mausoleum of Žabokreky nad Nitrou is a Secession monument built at the beginning of the 20th century and inspired by Oriental architecture. Its architecture and interior furnishings have been authentically preserved. An access path branching off from the main road leads through an original yew avenue to the mausoleum. The path is therefore also part of local orientation and complements the building with a clearly described access route.

Farm, Beer and Events

Farma u Ďurkových offers guided tours during which visitors can see the farm animals. The format is designed for groups of at least eight people. Every summer, Farma u Ďurkových also organizes a one-day holiday camp. Children learn about animal care and sustainable living there and take part in creative activities.

The local experience also includes the U Ďurkových brewery. The tour ends with a beer tasting. Unfiltered and unpasteurized beer is produced; the U Ďurkových bistro presents a wide selection of home-brewed beers. A café with a green terrace and views of the farm adds a dedicated seating area to the site.

The annual Žabokreky Tour is not focused on competition: neither times nor rankings are recorded. The event includes a 1,200-meter children’s course, followed by a program with attractions for children. This clearly distinguishes the format from a traditional race and combines the cycling event with its own offering for children.

Cycling Between Several Places

The Hornonitrianska, also called the Ponitrianska Cycling Route, reaches Žabokreky nad Nitrou and previously passes through Bojnice, Nováky and Partizánske. The cycling route is 66 kilometers long in total. It runs along paved paths, has a relatively easy profile and is marked in red.
