Kolačno at the Transition to the Hornonitrianska Basin: Nature and Culture

Kolačno is located in the northern part of the Tríbeč Mountains at the transition to the Hornonitrianska Basin. The Slovak village combines a clearly recognizable landscape with local history, ecclesiastical buildings, a municipal museum and connections to the surrounding localities. Landscape between Forests and Wetlands

Part of the municipality’s territory belongs to the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. Protection level II applies in this area. Protected features include preserved forest complexes on the Veľký Vracov and Michalov vrch mountains, as well as morphological and relief-related features and remnants of thermophilic flora. The wooded parts of Kolačno include hornbeam, oak, oak-beech and high-quality coniferous forests. The landscape therefore cannot be reduced to a single forest type.

The natural setting also includes two locally classified wetlands. The “Rybník s lužným lesom pri Kolačne” area covers 70,000 square metres. Mišove jarky is also located in Kolačno and is classified as a local wetland with an area of 53,000 square metres. Both names refer to independent landscape elements within the municipality’s territory and complement the view of the forest and mountain landscape.

Church, Museum and Local History

The reconstructed Roman Catholic Church of Saint Joseph the Worker is a prominent building in Kolačno. Local church history also includes the first chapel, which was consecrated on 19 March 1912. The written history of the village goes back even further: the first written mention of Kolačno dates from 1 June 1293 and refers to the place as “terra Kolechna”.

The name of the village itself also points to an older settlement history. Kolačno is associated with the medieval dialect word “kolešňa”. It referred to a place removed from the mother settlement, with temporary hay barns and animal pens. The municipal museum offers an illustrative way to explore this past. There you can see a living room from the 1920s, a historic fire engine, tools for producing and processing flax, and wedding clothing. The museum can be visited by prior arrangement.

In Ondrášová, a district of Kolačno, there is also a monument to those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising, erected in 1973. Alongside the older local and church history, memorial sites from the 20th century thus also come into view.

Routes, Views and Regional Connections

The green cycle route 5105 leads to the Vrchhora saddle. The ruins of the Kostol sv. Michala church and the Kaplnka sv. Jána Nepomúckeho chapel are located there. From Vrchhora, a viewpoint can be reached in approximately 15 minutes on foot. This approximate figure is intended as an orientation aid on site; it does not describe the length of the cycle route. Michalov hrad can be reached from Ondrášová by bus from Partizánske via Veľké Uherce and Kolačno to the terminus in Ondrášová.

Road III/51101 is relevant for travelling to the area and understanding the village’s location within the region. It runs via Veľké Uherce, Kolačno and Ondrášová and connects the localities to the supraregional and regional transport network. In addition, the bus services of the transport company SAD Prievidza connect Kolačno with Partizánske, Nováky and the neighbouring municipalities.

Local Life and Leisure

A multifunctional sports field with artificial turf is available in Kolačno for recreational sports. It is intended for tennis, volleyball, five-a-side football, basketball, streetball, nohejbal, badminton and similar activities. The local events calendar includes the German Shepherd competition for the Pohár SNP, organized by the Kolačno Cynological Club. The documented event had already been held for the 21st time; this does not, however, allow any future date to be inferred.
