Bošany: Churches, Castles and Cycling in Slovakia

Bošany combines sacred architectural heritage, historic castles and a cycling route that places the town within a longer route through several communities. Churches and chapels tell a story spanning several centuries

The Church of Saint Martin the Bishop has a long history: the original church in Bošany was first mentioned in 1332. The present church was completed in 1776 in the late Baroque style. It is a single-nave building with an integrated tower. The church also contains an altarpiece of Saint Martin from the same year, 1776. Thus, one sacred site brings together a medieval first mention, the Baroque construction phase and a specifically dated furnishing element.

Another historical landmark is the upper chapel. It was built in 1725 at the initiative of Mikuláš Bošáni; services are held there during Marian celebrations. The Red Chapel contains an image of the Virgin Mary, a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and a cross. In the past, it served on procession days and on days of prayer for the harvest. This former function belongs to the chapel’s recorded history and does not describe a present-day form of event.

Castles, statues and a park in the townscape

The old Renaissance castle of the Bossányiovci family is located directly in the centre of Bošany. As a fortified complex, it had polygonal bastions and a surrounding moat. A Baroque statue of Saint Florian stands in front of the castle. Another prominent memorial site is the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in front of the municipal office. It was restored in 2001 and remains in this location.

The architectural heritage also includes a Baroque-Classical castle built in 1776 by Ignác Bošáni and his wife, Terézia. Its façades and interior have been authentically preserved. The preserved Baroque-Classical castle is privately owned and is used for cultural and social purposes. The Renaissance castle of the Bossányiovci family is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction for use as a congress centre. The different historical designations and present-day functions are therefore an important part of the town’s history.

A new park with a pond was also created on the site of the former park next to the Baroque-Classical castle. This landscaped green space complements the historic buildings. For a visit focused on culture, this creates a townscape in which architecture, religious art, public monuments and a park stand side by side.

Bošany as a stop on a cycling route

One route runs from Partizánske via Brodzany, Krásno, Nedanovce, Bošany, Chynorany and Žabokreky nad Nitrou back to Partizánske. The cycling route is suitable for different types of bicycles.

Events regularly held in Bošany also include the Bošiansky jarmok. It complements the churches, chapels, castles and statues described as permanent features with a recurring part of local event life.
