Discover Krásno from two perspectives: through the Neoclassical Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the archaeological site on Chríb. The viewpoint at the double cross adds views of the middle Nitra Valley and the Tribeč Mountains to these cultural and historical landmarks. When planning your trip, you can focus on the village’s history, archaeological traces, and a walking excursion.

Church history in Krásno

The Neoclassical Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which still stands today, was built in 1800–1801 after the smaller medieval church next to it was demolished. Inside, Prussian vaults and an altarpiece depicting the Cross of Christ shape the space. The Austrian painter Jozef Zanussi created the painting in 1806. In 1801, František Xaver Fusch, Bishop of Nitra, consecrated the parish church. The construction, consecration, and interior decoration therefore have distinct dates: the altarpiece was created several years after the consecration and was not part of the work carried out during the years of construction.

Archaeological traces on Chríb

The archaeological site on Chríb preserves the foundations of a pre-Romanesque church dating from the 11th century. It is among Slovakia’s oldest architectural monuments to have survived at least in part. Numerous historical artifacts have been found in the medieval cemetery by the church, including coins—the oldest of which dates from the 12th century—and a bronze corpus of Christ from the same century.

Chronologically, Krásno takes you from the pre-Romanesque church on Chríb and the medieval cemetery finds to the Neoclassical parish church of the early 19th century. The altarpiece created in 1806 adds a later chapter to this more recent building history. For visitors interested in culture, the difference also lies in the kinds of evidence: archaeological foundations and finds on Chríb, and a preserved church interior in the village.

From the municipality of Krásno, you can reach the archaeological site via an unmarked footpath. Check the current route before setting off; trail markings can change.

Views and routes

At the double cross on Chríb, you can enjoy views west towards the middle Nitra Valley and Topoľčany, and east towards the Tribeč Mountains. A free-to-use spotting scope adds to the viewpoint. The shelter provides hikers with protection from rain and somewhere to sit. Before your visit, briefly check the condition of the spotting scope and shelter.

A hiking route through the Tribeč area, published on December 26, 2022, reaches its lowest point in Krásno at 185 metres above sea level. Route conditions and trail markings can change. A description of the cycling tour “Bicyklom po severnej časti Tribeča,” published in 2016, follows local roads through Krásno and climbs to Chríb. The two descriptions offer different kinds of guidance: the hiking route gives an elevation along the route, while the cycling tour describes the route along local roads and the climb to Chríb. Check current conditions and the route before hiking or cycling.
