Veľký Šariš – Šariš Castle, Churches and Nature Reserve

Veľký Šariš combines a distinctive castle landscape with sacred art, regional museum history and protected natural areas. If you are looking for a place with several clearly distinct experiences for your trip to Slovakia, the main highlight is Šariš Castle: it was first documented in 1245 and houses a historical exhibition.

Šariš Castle Between History and Nature

The castle can be experienced not only through its history but also through its various visitor options. A tour of the Donjon observation tower takes approximately 25 to 35 minutes. The “Alžbetka” Bastion Tower houses an exhibition on alchemy and brewing. Those who wish to explore the castle hill at a slower pace will find an educational trail with 11 stops there.

Šarišský hradný vrch is a national nature reserve of volcanic origin in the cadastral area of Veľký Šariš. Rare plants such as the grass-leaved iris and the Turk’s cap lily grow on the ridge. Thus, the focus at the castle is not only on historic walls: the site combines documented cultural history with a distinctive landscape and botanical features.

Churches, Chapels and Museum

The religious buildings also give Veľký Šariš its own distinctive character. The Church of St James was originally a single-nave Romanesque-Gothic church and is now a three-nave church. Medieval wall paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries were discovered inside. The Chapel of St Elisabeth is an early Baroque religious building from the last third of the 17th century and formerly served as a burial chapel. In the past, pilgrimages took place there on the feast day of St Elisabeth.

The Chapel of St Cunigunde was built sometime after 1544 on the grounds of an Augustinian monastery. It has the only patronage of St Cunigunde in Slovakia and is the only surviving part of the monastery church. For visitors interested in cultural history, the Veľký Šariš Town Museum and Gallery complements these buildings with a 200-square-metre museum and gallery space. The first museum exhibition about Šariš Castle comprised 350 archaeological finds from the 12th to the 17th century.

Industrial History and Orientation on Site

An unusual testimony to industrial history stands on the grounds of the Veľký Šariš railway station: the “Mlinská džurka” steam locomotive was built in 1882 and is considered the oldest preserved steam locomotive in Slovakia. The Veľký Šariš Tourist Information Centre provides an overview of cultural, sporting and tourist activities in the town and at Šariš Castle. You can also buy souvenirs related to Šariš Castle and products made by local artists there. The Veľký Šariš Archaeopark is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00.

Hiking Trail, Cycle Route and Events

For those arriving on foot, a specific connection is documented: the footpath from Veľký Šariš railway station to Šariš Castle follows a yellow-marked hiking trail. A heavily used section of the international EuroVelo 11 route also passes through Veľký Šariš, where the safety of cyclists and pedestrians has repeatedly been discussed.

The 2026 events calendar also features a variety of highlights. “Šariš športuje”, an archery competition, is scheduled for 5 September 2026. The cycling race “Cyklopreteky – MTB Kráľ Šariša” is listed in the official 2026 events calendar for 3 October 2026. The New Year’s Eve ascent to Šariš Castle is announced for 31 December 2026 as the 39th edition. These dates clearly differ from the town’s year-round cultural and natural profile and should therefore be regarded as separate event occasions.
