Kapušany – Castle, Culture and Trails
Kapušany combines a striking castle ruin with cultural monuments in the village, a park with historical significance and sports facilities, and a well-described route from the railway station. This gives you a destination where the natural environment, local history, and different ways of visiting can be closely connected.
Kapušiansky hrad between the castle complex and nature reserve
The ruin of Kapušiansky hrad Castle is a national cultural monument. Its predominantly rectangular layout is divided into an upper castle and an outer bailey. The castle grounds are freely accessible, and admission is free. The complex is located in the Kapušiansky hradný vrch Nature Reserve at an elevation of 504 m. The 18.1-hectare area contains an important botanical site on volcanic rock. In addition, Kapušiansky hrad is part of the Natura 2000 site SKUEVO322 Fintické svahy, which is home to rare animal species of European importance and rare plant species.
Trails with different levels of difficulty
If you would like to reach Kapušiansky hrad on foot, you can choose between two trails: one is longer and less demanding, while the other is shorter and more demanding. From Kapušany railway station, a green-marked trail leads 2.3 km to the castle. At Kapušiansky hrad, there is also a guided ascent over the castle hill with eight stations along the way.
The castle offers guided castle tours, archery, coin minting, demonstrations of blacksmithing and pottery, as well as tastings of medieval cuisine specialties. Alongside viewing the ruin, this provides an experiential way to engage with the medieval castle world.
Church and educational trail in the village
In the center of Kapušany stands the Church of St. Martin, Kostol sv. Martina, which is also a national cultural monument. It was built in the Classicalist style and incorporates structural remains of an older church. The new church was solemnly consecrated and dedicated to him on November 2, 1798, the feast day of Saint Martin.
The information panels of the educational trail “Velikáni kapušianskych dejín” are located in the Park svätých Cyrila a Metoda. The educational trail provides information about selected important figures in the history of Kapušany, as well as significant places in the municipality, including the castle, church, and manor house. Its information panels also include ergonomic play elements such as memory games and puzzles for children and people with disabilities.
Park, events, and travel
The Park svätých Cyrila a Metoda features a covered park amphitheater with seating for 1,000 visitors. There is also a paved sports field with artificial lighting. It is used for basketball, tennis, and football, as well as for ice skating and ice hockey in winter. Kapušany has good bus connections; traveling by train is also possible.
