Fričovce: Castle, Churches and Routes into the Kanné Valley

Fričovce combines an unusually concentrated historical heritage with walking routes and access to the Kanné Valley. At its heart is the Renaissance castle, complemented by the Church of Saint Bartholomew, an Empire-style burial chapel and other testimonies to the history of the village. Renaissance Castle with Rare Sgraffito Decoration

The Fričovce Renaissance Castle was built from 1623 to 1630 by the master craftsman Michal Sorger from Prešov for the nobleman Valent Berthóty. Its architecture is remarkable not only because of the period in which it was built: the blind arcades were originally decorated with 150 mythological and historical figures. The themes depicted came from antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era.

A sgraffito decoration has also been preserved, ranking among the rarest of its kind in Slovakia. The castle is open to the public. Guided tours convey its history, architecture and distinctive sgraffito decoration, giving the visit a clear cultural and historical focus.

Park, Walks and Churches in the Village

The castle is accompanied by a park of approximately 5 hectares. Ponds, water features, old trees and numerous natural corners shape this space, which is suitable for walks and relaxation. Its approximate size remains an important point of reference: the park is far more than a small area immediately surrounding the building, without this implying any particular circular route.

The Church of Saint Bartholomew was built in 1737–1738 on the site of a Gothic church from the 14th or 15th century that had previously stood there. Inside is an altar created in 1752 by the master J. Kebling from Levoča. Beneath the church is a crypt believed to be the burial place of nobles from the Fričovce branch of the Berthóty family. In front of the church stands a burial chapel built in 1811 in the form of a small mausoleum and designed in the Empire style. The Roman Catholic Church of the Three Martyrs of Košice was added in 1993.

Kanné Valley and Higher Viewpoints

Fričovce is a starting point for access to the Kanné Valley. A marked hiking trail leads through the valley from Šindliar to the Branisko ridge. This adds a landscape perspective to the history of the village: the castle and park represent short explorations close to the village, while the marked trail describes a hiking connection through the valley and up to Branisko.

North of Fričovce lies Hradisko, an archaeological site with finds from a Slavic hillfort dating from the early Middle Ages. The higher parts of Fričovce offer beautiful panoramic views. For travel to the village, Fričovce lies along the route of the D1 motorway; according to the municipal assessment, this contributes to good accessibility.
