Sobrance District: Nature, Spas and Culture

Sobrance District combines protected landscapes, special bodies of water, a spa tradition and unusual museums. Here you can combine nature observation with hikes, regional culture and an insight into the history of the Slovak-Ukrainian border region. The selection ranges from the bird-rich Senianske rybníky and the volcanic lake Morské oko to Sobranecké kúpele and the Sobranecký wine-growing region.

Bird Habitats, Forests and Rare Plants

A total of 283 bird species have been recorded in the Senianske rybníky. The wetland is of great importance for biodiversity and for numerous endangered plant and animal species. Several smaller protected areas show how varied the landscape of Sobrance District is: the PR Lysá nature reserve in Podhoroď and Choňkovce preserves rare forest and forest-steppe communities as well as an isolated occurrence of the many-flowered oak (Quercus polycarpa).

In the PR Lysák near Remetské Hámre, thermophilic beech-oak communities grow with many-flowered oak and yellowish oak (Quercus dalechampii); the protected area lies at an elevation of 821 m. The PR Machnatý vrch in Vyšná Rybnica protects rare moss communities in acidic beech forests, including the endangered pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata). In the PR Drieň near Hlivištia, forest and forest-steppe communities on andesite form the landscape, together with a mass occurrence of Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas). At the Beňatinský travertín natural monument, you can see the easternmost travertine outcrop in Slovakia; travertine formation continues there to this day.

Morské oko and Trails in the Vihorlat Landscapes

Morské oko is a 13-hectare impounded volcanic lake in Sobrance District, situated at an elevation of 618 m. The Morské oko–Sninský kameň section of the educational trail is 4 km long and leads from 618 to 1,005 m above sea level. A second perspective is offered by the Vtáčím rajom educational trail: it is 16 km long and has five lookout towers.

The smaller Malé Morské oko has specific geographical features: its water surface covers 0.33 ha, its depth ranges from 2.4 to 4 m, and it has no surface outflow. Kaštielik Morské oko was built on the shore of Morské oko in 1924 as a place of recreation. From the car park, it can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail approximately 800 m long.

Border History, Guitars and a Wooden Church

The Múzeum Na čiare in Lekárovce documents life on the Slovak-Ukrainian border as well as the history of smuggling and people smuggling. The museum's basic area is open to the public; visits must be arranged by telephone, and the tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. This makes the museum visit distinctly different from a classic sightseeing tour.

In Sobrance, the Gitarové múzeum presents an exhibition with hundreds of guitars and thousands of objects from contemporary history. During guided experiential tours, visitors can try out many of the instruments on display themselves. The Greek Catholic wooden church in Ruská Bystrá adds another cultural and historical highlight; it is one of the listed wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians.

Spa Tradition and Wine-Growing

Sobranecké kúpele is one of the oldest spas in Slovakia. Its mineral springs are already mentioned in documents from 1336. Five cold, mildly carbonated, hydrogen-sulfide-bearing and medium-mineralized sodium chloride springs rise there. The Sobranecký wine-growing region also has a long tradition of wine production. The nearby company REGIA TT, s. r. o., in Orechová produces high-quality varietal and vintage wines that have received awards at various wine exhibitions.

Regional Orientation

For further orientation within the area, you can visit Blatná Polianka. The Vyšné Nemecké border crossing in Sobrance District crosses the state border into Ukraine and adds a clearly designated border point to the regional picture.
