Michalovce District: Culture, Lakes and Water Landscapes

Michalovce District combines cultural monuments with lakes, marked hiking trails and opportunities for water sports. This creates a diverse picture for planning your trip: you can view historic manor houses and castles, choose paths by the water or explore the varied landscapes around Zemplínska Šírava and Vinianske Lake.

Manor Houses and Cultural Monuments

At the Zemplín Museum, the Klenotnica exhibition leads to the first floor of the restored central Baroque-Classical manor house. The central part of the Sztáray Manor House, which houses the museum, contains permanent exhibitions on art history and sacred art. The manor house itself is designated as a cultural monument. The exhibitions therefore combine museum themes with the building’s historic architecture.

Senné Manor also represents the cultural history of Lower Zemplín. The national cultural monument was built as a manor house in the 16th century and rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 17th century. It serves as the entrance to the protected Senianske rybníky bird area and is considered one of the oldest, as well as one of the last surviving buildings of its kind in Lower Zemplín. Vinné Castle was declared a cultural monument in 1963 and complements the selection of historic destinations.

Lakes, Water Sports and Trails

Zemplínska Šírava is the second-largest reservoir in Slovakia and has seven recreation centres. There are opportunities for swimming, water sports and fishing, as well as mountain biking and hiking. Jet skis, yachts and pedal boats are also mentioned in connection with Zemplínska Šírava. Alongside visits to cultural monuments, this places the distinctly water-oriented side of Michalovce District at the centre of attention.

The smaller Vinianske Lake has a water surface of 8 hectares. Swimming, sailing, hiking and ice skating in winter are possible at the lake. From Vinné, Vinianske Lake can be reached via a road that runs around the lake, as well as via hiking trails.

Hiking to the Castle and Through the Forests

Marked hiking trails lead from Vinianske Jazero and from the Hôrka, Medvedia Hora and Kamenec recreation centres on Zemplínska Šírava to Vinné Castle. For another perspective on nature, the Náučný chodník Vihorlatskými bučinami educational trail begins in Poruba pod Vihorlatom at the foot of the Vihorlatské vrchy mountains. This allows historic destinations and signposted trails to be considered as different focal points without combining them into a single excursion.

Getting There and Regional Orientation

Zemplínska Šírava is connected by a paved four-lane road and several SAD bus services from both bus stations in Michalovce. This specific transport connection complements orientation between the water destinations and the other sights. In Lower Zemplín, you can also try holúbky as a regional speciality and drink Tokaj wine.
