Blatná Polianka between Wetlands and Village History

Blatná Polianka is a destination for you if nature observation and a deeply rooted local history are meant to go hand in hand. The Senianske rybníky National Nature Reserve covers the cadastral area of Blatná Polianka. In this same landscape, wetlands, fishponds, and important habitats for waterbirds exist alongside a settlement whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. When choosing accommodation, the key consideration is therefore whether you want to focus your stay on experiences in nature, traces of the past, or both.

Wetlands and the birdlife of the Senianske rybníky

The Senianske rybníky National Nature Reserve protects rare aquatic biocenoses and waterbirds. This technical term refers to communities of organisms that are associated with bodies of water. The area lies on an important migration route for waterbirds and waders and serves as a resting area for them. The Senné Fish-ponds wetland, whose cadastral areas include Blatná Polianka, also lies on an important migration route for waterbirds. It contains seasonally flooded grasslands, shrub swamps, and 28 fishponds.

The Senianske rybníky Special Protection Area is located near Blatná Polianka and is part of the Natura 2000 network. In this bird protection area and its wider surroundings, 295 bird species have been recorded; breeding has been confirmed for 125 species. The area has a particular documented significance for Slovakia’s birdlife: it is one of the three most important breeding areas in Slovakia for Purple Herons, Little Egrets, Great Egrets, Eurasian Spoonbills, Black-crowned Night Herons, Great Bitterns, Western Marsh Harriers, Whiskered Terns, and Pied Avocets. Senianske rybníky is also the only regular breeding site of the Eurasian Spoonbill in Slovakia.

Nature trail and other experiences

The Náučný chodník Vtáčím rajom nature trail is accessible from Blatná Polianka. The route is designated as a 15-kilometre-long, easy nature trail accessible year-round. Observation towers along the path are suitable for viewing the landscape and birds. The trail therefore offers a clearly defined way to experience the wetland landscape not merely as a protected area, but along a longer route and from designated observation points.

Recreational fishing is also permitted in the Senianske rybníky area. This aspect fits with Blatná Polianka’s historical character: the population’s livelihood was based on agriculture and, in particular, fishing. This tradition is reflected in the two fish on the municipal coat of arms. At the end of Blatná Polianka, Ranch Nová zem is located near the Senianske rybníky. It offers visitors horseback riding and provides space for school trips, corporate events, family celebrations, and campfires.

Historical traces in the village

The first written reference to Blatná Polianka dates from 1417. At the same time, archaeological remains dating from the 9th to the 11th century have been found in the area. A more prominent architectural landmark is the Reformed Church: it was built in 1906 and restored in 1931. Together with the fishing tradition, this creates a village character in which the nature of the Senianske rybníky and the history of the municipality offer two distinct yet equally accessible perspectives.
