Gelnica District: Mining History, Forests and Trails

Gelnica District combines an impressive mining history with extensive forest areas, protected landscapes and marked trails. The range of activities includes visiting a museum in Gelnica, cycling through the Hnilec Valley, following an educational trail suitable for all age groups and crossing the covered wooden bridge between Kluknava and Štefanská Huta over the Hornád.

Mining History in Gelnica

The Banícke múzeum in Gelnica documents mining, folk culture, the town’s history, geology and guild traditions. Exhibits include miners’ tools, mine lamps, old mining maps, models illustrating ore extraction, as well as workwear and festive clothing associated with mining. The museum’s surroundings also include the štôlňa Jozef. It was opened to the public in August 2016 and subsequently became part of the Banícke múzeum in Gelnica exhibition. The Banský skanzen also contains a historic stamp mill powered by water from nearby Turzovské jazero, illustrating ore processing in the 17th century.

Forests and Protected Landscapes

With forests covering 74.6 percent of its area, Gelnica District has the highest proportion of forest in Slovakia. The district’s natural features include the natural monuments Margecianska línia and Závadské skalky. It is also home to the Kloptaň Nature Reserve and the Poľana protected peatland. These protected areas and natural monuments provide clearly distinguishable points of interest in the landscape beyond its mining history. Margecany lies at the confluence of the Hornád and Hnilec rivers on the left bank of the Ružín Reservoir. The town is therefore connected with two rivers and a reservoir at the same time. Cycling Route and Educational Trail

Officially marked Cycling Route 021 runs through Gelnica District. It leads from Margecany through the Hnilec Valley towards the Dedinky recreation area. The route thus describes a specific connection through the district without requiring different excursion destinations to be combined into a single circuit. The Banský náučný chodník, an educational trail focused on mining, begins at Banícke námestie. This square is easily accessible from Gelnica mesto railway station; the educational trail is also considered suitable for all age groups. Wooden Bridge, Monuments and Smaller Local Attractions

The covered wooden bridge between Kluknava and Štefanská Huta was built over the Hornád in 1832 from larch wood. It is considered the only one of its kind in Slovakia. Today it is used for local pedestrian and car traffic, although car traffic is restricted. At the same time, it is regarded as a tourist attraction and a technical monument. Kluknava is also home to a Baroque manor house classified as a national cultural monument. The Dom služobníctva in Kluknava is likewise a national cultural monument and houses the Múzeum obuvi. In Margecany, the Park Padlých is located in the town centre. This well-maintained memorial park is suitable for a short stay, quiet reflection and a peaceful walk. Turzov can be reached from Gelnica via a blue-marked hiking trail. The Lower Lake of Turzov offers opportunities for fishing. Rolova Huta is home to the Bujanovský Tunnel, a technical monument. Originally built as a railway tunnel, the structure connects Rolova Huta with the Kozinec recreation area. Another cultural and historical stop is the Baroque Chapel of Saint Joseph in Smolník.
