Gelnica

Gelnica lies in the Hnilec Valley in the northeastern part of the Volovské vrchy mountains, northwest of Košice. The town combines evidence of its mining history with a protected historic center, trails into the surrounding landscape, and bodies of water offering opportunities for a variety of activities. This makes it possible to plan a trip here that combines cultural history, walks, hiking, and cycling in a practical way.

Mining history to explore and understand

The Banícke múzeum documents mining, folklore, the history of Gelnica, geology, and the guild system in its collections. The exhibits include mining tools and mining lamps, old mining maps, wooden models showing how ore was extracted from the mine, miners’ work and festive clothing, mining symbols, and a scale model of a mine entrance. The museum is housed in a building constructed in 1805 from stone taken from the ruins of Gelnica Castle.

The exhibition also includes Štôlňa Jozef, which was opened to the public in August 2016. Mining also shapes the surrounding area: Preserved miners’ cottages bear witness to the old mining tradition. In the developing Banský skanzen, a unique historic stamp mill and crushing plant is in operation, powered by the water of nearby Turzovské jazero. A type of smelting furnace characteristic of Smolník, Gelnica, and the Hnilec Valley was reconstructed after 300 years. Hydropower also helped Gelnica become the first city in what is now Slovakia to establish a public electricity supply, in 1894.

Townscape, churches, and the Hnilec

The center of Gelnica was declared a heritage zone in 1992. In Gelnica, the Gotická cesta identifies the Rímskokatolícky kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie as its best-known monument. In the Protestant church, the balustrade of the so-called baníckeho chóru contains an elongated niche with a sculptural scene from mining and two flanking miner figures.

Another prominent structure is the stone bridge over the Hnilec. It was built between 1837 and 1845 as a solid two-arch structure made of rubble stone and is currently used by pedestrians. Hrad v Gelnici is designated as a national cultural monument of Slovakia; its grounds are now used as a park, recreation area, and destination for walks.

Trails, views, and bodies of water

The Banský náučný chodník begins at Banícke námestie, which is easily accessible from Gelnica mesto railway station. The educational trail is self-guided, linear, and can be walked in both directions. It can be used year-round; the trail and the mining sites along it are maintained. This creates a clearly recognizable connection between local history and outdoor activity, without making your visit dependent on a guided tour.

Vyhliadka mládeže / Gloriet can be reached from Gelnica via a blue-marked mountain trail. It consists of a rocky outcrop with a rest area at an elevation of 785 m and offers views of all of Gelnica. Those who would like to explore the surrounding area by bicycle can use cycle route No. 2858, a 40 km-long route suitable for touring bicycles and considered relatively demanding.

The lakes also have their own attractions: Fishing opportunities are available at Spodné jazero. Horné jazero is 17 m deep and serves as a natural swimming pool. For further orientation: Nalepkovo Nalepkovo, Margecany Margecany, Kluknava Kluknava.
