Ižipovce: Hiking among gorges, a cave and Liptovská Mara

Ižipovce lies in the central part of the Liptov Basin below the Choč Mountains at an elevation of 598 metres. The village combines a distinctive landscape with several opportunities to explore the surrounding area on foot.

Between Prosečné and the surrounding valleys

The Prosečné Site of European Importance includes the cadastral area of Ižipovce. The protected area is characterised by limestone and dolomite bedrock and a typical cliff landscape. Its characteristic natural features include the deep gorges of the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys. This landscape makes the village a good choice for travellers who, on a trip through Slovakia, want to experience not only individual viewpoints but also different types of terrain.

The Prosiecka Valley lies near Ižipovce and can also be reached on foot from Ižipovce. Those planning a longer day trip can consider the route through the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys: it leads from Prosiek to Kvačany and takes six hours. On this route, more difficult sections in the lower and upper parts of the Prosiecka Valley are tackled with the aid of technical equipment. For planning purposes, it is therefore advisable to take a close look at the character of the route and your own abilities.

Hikes with different levels of difficulty

Another option is the circular hike to Jánošíkov stôl (Čerenová skala) from Liptovská Anna. It is considered an easy alpine hike, is eight kilometres long and includes 459 metres of ascent and descent. The stated duration is three hours. The ascent to Jánošíkov stôl is also considered relatively steep; the trees occasionally offer views of Liptovská Mara. This allows you to weigh up a clearly defined circular hike against a longer route through two valleys.

A cave and a waterscape

The 20-metre-long limestone cave Jaskyňa nad Ižipovcami lies directly above Ižipovce. It is located in the cadastral area of Ižipovce and is described as a fluviokarst cave with archaeological finds. The low entrance measures 40 × 60 centimetres and leads, after approximately two metres of crawling, into an oval-shaped chamber. You should take these specific dimensions into account when planning your own excursion.

The Liptovská Mara reservoir lies near Ižipovce. The surrounding area offers opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding and boat trips. This allows a stay shaped by gorges and hiking trails during the day to be complemented by activities on the water. Whether you focus on a hiking route, the cave or the waterscape can therefore also influence the appropriate length of your stay and your accommodation choice.

A place with its own craft tradition

The historical livelihood and craft traditions of Ižipovce included farming, cloth weaving, blacksmithing, carpentry and the production of handričkové korovce. These references to former activities give the village a cultural dimension alongside its natural landscape. Travellers who enjoy combining landscapes and local history can therefore regard Ižipovce not only as a starting point for hikes but also as a destination in its own right.
