Hrachovo Between Cultural History and Nature
Hrachovo combines important historical monuments with a protected natural area and a clearly described MTB route. If you are looking for a place with cultural history and cycling connections for your trip to Slovakia, you will find several different points of interest here. The history of the village extends from the castle dating from the first half of the 15th century, through Renaissance and Neoclassical buildings, to the memory of a Slovak national poet.
Castle Hill, Manor House, and Curia
The former castle of Hrachovo was built on a hill in the first half of the 15th century. Part of a late Gothic window from this castle has been preserved, built into the tower of the Evangelical church. In this way, a specific architectural element of the former complex has been passed down in a later sacred building.
The Renaissance manor house in Hrachovo was built in 1565 by Zsigmunt Ruthényi and Klára Palágyiová. In 1727, it was converted into a two-storey building and has retained this form to the present day. The manor house included a landscaped park with rare trees. It is also associated with a landscape park from the first half of the 19th century. The Neoclassical curia in Hrachovo was built in 1773 by František Tihányi.
Churches with Older Works of Art
The Evangelical church was built in 1808 in the Neoclassical style with Baroque elements. Inside, there is a Renaissance altar from 1629, transferred from the former wooden Gothic church. A stone Gothic baptismal font from the former church has also been preserved in the present-day Evangelical church.
The Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary was completed in 1769 and built in the Neoclassical style. Its furnishings include a painting of the Virgin Mary from the late 19th century and a stone baptismal font from 1830. Hrachovo therefore brings together several different historical periods and furnishings without requiring the individual churches to be combined into a single attraction.
Samo Vozár and the Village’s Culture of Remembrance
Hrachovo is the birthplace of Samo Vozár, a poet, translator, and Slovak national poet. In Hrachovo, there is a house with a memorial plaque where Samo Vozár lived. His grave is located in the local cemetery. The primary school in Hrachovo established a memorial room in honor of the poet, containing interesting exhibits from his life.
Natural Area and Cycling Route
The natural features include the Svetlianska cerina nature reserve. This area is subject to the fourth level of protection and covers 15.30 hectares. Old trees provide habitat and a rare refuge for cavity-nesting birds and other fauna. For cyclists, the Cyklomagistrála Liptov–Horehronie–Gemer, Route 040, is a separate point of orientation: it currently ends in Hrachovo and is classified as a moderately difficult MTB sports route.
