Rimavská Seč lies at the confluence of the Rimava and Blh rivers. South of the village is the Cerová vrchovina-Porimavie Special Protection Area; at the same time, Rimavská Seč is listed among its cadastral areas. The village setting thus brings together a clearly documented history, sacred architecture, Jewish memory and a protected landscape.

Rivers and Historical Market Days

The history of Rimavská Seč dates back to the late Middle Ages: on 18 June 1450, the village was granted the right to hold markets twice a year. The dates set were 29 September, Michaelmas Day, and Corpus Christi. These two dates form part of the village's historical market history and, alongside its location by the water, give Rimavská Seč another distinctive feature.

Church and Local Memory

The church in Rimavská Seč is a stop on the Gothic Route. This tourist route connects the Gothic churches of the region along a shared route. The building in Rimavská Seč is described as an original Gothic structure from 1457, with its Gothic spatial arrangement preserved, a straight-ended presbytery and a vaulted ribbed cross-vault. The tower was added asymmetrically on the north side in the 16th century; the church is also surrounded by a defensive wall.

Inside, the main altar features a large painting of the Conversion of Saint Paul from the early 19th century. The church stands in the central part of Rimavská Seč, making it a useful landmark for finding your way around the village. Another historical trace is the Jewish cemetery on Cintorinska Street. It lies behind the Christian cemetery. The Jewish section is no longer in use but is nevertheless well maintained; the cemetery contains 58 gravestones.

Bird Protection Area and Educational Trail

The Cerová vrchovina-Porimavie Special Protection Area lists, among others, Alcedo atthis, Bubo bubo and Merops apiaster as protected bird species. Important bird habitats include stands of willows and alders along the riverbanks. The protected landscape also includes the medium-sized Rimava and Slaná rivers. Those interested in the connection between river landscapes, habitats and bird protection will find here a clearly natural-history-oriented complement to the village's cultural sites.

In the vicinity of Rimavská Seč, the 4.6 km-long Pieskovcové chrbty educational trail begins on the outskirts of Chrámec in the Okres Rimavská Sobota district. It runs through the Pieskovcové chrbty Site of European Importance, where the second and fourth levels of nature protection apply. Five trilingual information panels cover the protected area, insects, relief, plants and birds. The trail is thus described not only by its length but also by its thematic structure.

Getting Your Bearings on Site

Departure information is available for the Rimavská Seč - jednota bus stop. Together with the centrally located church, the cemetery on Cintorinska Street and the nearby educational trail, this provides several clearly identifiable landmarks. If you would like to combine culture and landscape in one place, you can distinguish between church-history sites, Jewish memory and natural-history exploration without conflating the respective themes.
