Hodejov combines a turbulent castle history with a hilly landscape, historic buildings and a marked hiking trail. This makes the village particularly suitable for you if, during a trip through Slovakia, you would like to combine cultural history with paths through a landscape of distinctive character. In the western part of Hodejov, the village is crossed by the Cerová vrchovina hilly landscape; the Gortva stream flows through this landscape.

Castle Hill with Gothic Ruins

The most prominent historical destination is Hodejovský hrad, a Gothic castle ruin of archaeological significance. Its origins are dated to before 1244. A castle was built on the hill above Hodejov in the second half of the 13th century. The complex withstood attacks by the Hussites and the Ottomans, but was conquered and devastated in 1574 after several attempts.

Today, only minor foundation wall remains survive from the castle. Nevertheless, the castle hill preserves several independent points of interest for a visit: the small Chapel of Saint Anne also stands there. Anyone interested in medieval history can understand at this site the difference between a largely preserved castle complex and an archaeologically documented ruin. The sparse visible remains do not represent a fully preserved fortress, but rather a place whose significance arises primarily from its history and its location on the hill.

Hiking between Hodejov and Hajnáčka

Hodejov is the starting point of a green-marked hiking trail. It leads to Steblová skala, Mount Ragáč and Hajnáčka. This gives the village a clearly named access point to a hiking connection whose destinations include a rock formation, a mountain and another village. If you do not want to focus your route solely on the local history, this trail forms the scenic highlight of your stay.

A second point of orientation is regional Route 2. It leads from Blhovce via Hodejov to Jesenské. In addition, mineral spring water can be sampled in Hodejov along a regional tourism route. The two route descriptions offer different perspectives: the green-marked trail connects Hodejov with natural destinations and Hajnáčka, while Route 2 places the village within a regional connection between Blhovce and Jesenské.

Buildings, Finds and Memories

Hodejov also has several historical points of reference away from the castle hill. In the village stands a late Classicist manor house dating from 1865, designed by the Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl. There is also a Classicist church. These two buildings complement the medieval castle ruin with later forms of the village's history.

Hodejov's history is also connected with significant finds. The Hodejov bronze hoard is considered one of the finest and most scientifically valuable finds in Slovakia. In 1961 and 1962, a total of 361 artefacts were collected in Hodejov, each of which has its own historical significance. This makes the village interesting for you even if archaeological topics are not the main reason for your trip: Hodejov preserves history not only in buildings, but also in individual artefacts.

Another historical trace leads to Sándor Petőfi, who stayed in Hodejov in 1846 and 1847. Two references to the village's use at that time also date from the 19th century: Hodejov had iron baths in operation, and a steam mill operated there. Traditionally, the Saint Hubertus hunting celebrations take place in Hodejov every year. Together with the manor house, church and archaeological finds, these features create a village landscape in which different eras are visible side by side.
