Hnúšťa Between Mining History and Culture

Hnúšťa lies in a basin at the foot of the Stolické vrchy mountain range; this basin is enclosed by the elevations of Sinec, Ostrá, Štepov vrch, Brandzová and Brezina. In the town center, the Klenovská and Tisovská Rimava rivers merge to form the Rimava. For travel planning, Hnúšťa therefore combines a natural setting, industrial history and several clearly distinguishable cultural monuments.

Mining and Notable Buildings

The Hnúšťa Mining Museum presents the mining history of the town and the region. A visit includes brief access to underground sections of the mine, where you cover 600 meters. This is access to an unused section of a mine that is still in operation. The experience therefore differs significantly from a purely exhibition-based presentation of mining history.

A notable work of art is the “Detvanec” sgraffito by Vojtech Stašík from 1957. It is the largest sgraffito in Slovakia. The Petrivaldský Villa complements this cultural focus: the two-storey Neoclassical building dates from around 1830 and has been listed as a national cultural monument under number 11262 since 1998. The villa houses an interactive exhibition about Janko Francisci-Rimavský and Matej Hrebenda, as well as an exhibition on the development of the book.

The religious buildings also reflect different historical layers. The Neoclassical Evangelical church dates from 1808 and stands on the site of an older church with a cemetery dating from the early 14th century. The Neoclassical Roman Catholic church was built in 1802; the first chapel was established as early as 1788. In the Maša district, you will also find the Mašiansky Bridge, one of two surviving single-arch stone bridges dating from around 1765. It is covered by a newer structure.

Educational Trail, Bicycles and Outdoor Pool

If you would like to get to know Hnúšťa through more than just buildings and exhibitions, the section of the Mária Széchy educational trail in the town’s cadastral area offers a historical perspective. It follows the road between Fiľakovo and Muráň castles from 1644. The town established this section of the educational trail in 2021.

For cycling, the Hnúšťa Tourist Information Center rents out two electric bicycles, three cross bikes and a bicycle trailer for children. Helmets and reflective equipment are also available for the rented bicycles. The outdoor pool has a 25-meter-long swimming pool with a depth of 1 to 1.8 meters, as well as a 10 × 10-meter children’s pool with a small slide.

Planning Your Visit

The Tourist Information Center offers reservations for the town’s museums, information about cultural, social and tourist activities in Hnúšťa and the surrounding area, as well as tips for hiking and cycling tours. The exhibition in the Petrivaldský Villa is open on weekdays. At weekends, visits are possible only by prior arrangement and subject to the availability of a guide. This different visiting arrangement is important practical information if you would like to include the museum, villa and exhibitions in your trip.
