Večelkov between Hills, the Reservoir and Cultural Landscape

Večelkov showcases a landscape in which open hills, scattered forests, a large water reservoir and historical traces are closely connected with the village. When selecting accommodation in this Slovak municipality, you will find several different points of interest for your trip: a specific path to a spring, regional bus connections, summer use of the freely accessible part of the reservoir, as well as cultural and natural features that shape the character of Večelkov.

Landscape in the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area

The landscape of Večelkov consists predominantly of treeless hills, which are often divided by erosion gullies. The underlying geology is formed by Tertiary rocks and sandstone. In the western part of the cadastral area, there are scattered beech forests with oaks and black locusts. The cadastral area of Večelkov lies within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, which includes rare and valuable biotopes.

The protected plants mentioned for Večelkov include poniklec lúčny černastý, kukučka vencová, kosatec nízky, mechúrnik stromovitý, zlatofúz južný and several species of the genus kavyľ. The landscape is therefore characterized not only by its open forms and wooded sections, but also by a remarkable plant life.

Water Reservoir and the Path to Studnička sv. Márie

A large water reservoir lies in the cadastral area of Večelkov, together with Petrovce and Dubno. The freely accessible part is used by anglers from all over Slovakia and from abroad. During the summer months, this freely accessible part serves primarily as a swimming area for local residents. Thus, two clearly different uses coexist by the water: fishing with appeal beyond the region and summer swimming by the local population.

Studnička sv. Márie is located in the vicinity of Večelkov. It can be reached via an existing farm track that begins directly before the village on the main road and follows the Čoma stream. This specific route makes the spring a tangible destination in the nearby area, without requiring a longer route or a specific walking time.

Culture and History of the Village

A statue of Sándor Petőfi stands in Večelkov. It was created by the academic sculptor Július Mag, who was originally from Večelkov. The brown-coal mines form another historical dimension: such mines existed in the cadastral area of Večelkov from the mid-19th century.

Večelkov is also one of the Slovak municipalities belonging to the UNESCO Global Geopark Novohrad-Nógrád.

Getting There and Further Village Selection

Večelkov lies on a road connecting most municipalities in the microregion with the regional centers of Rimavská Sobota, Fiľakovo and Lučenec. For orientation using the regional bus, route 475 is relevant: on the Fiľakovo–Hajnáčka–Tachty route, it serves the stops Večelkov, OcÚ, and Večelkov.

For a further overview of the places in this selection, you can also visit Studená, Tisovec, Horné Zahorany, Petrovce, Rimavské Janovce, Včelince, Bottovo and Šimonovce.
