Horné Zahorany combines a distinctive cultural heritage with a landscape whose character is closely linked to water, rock and historic paths. Highlights include an evangelical Classicist church, the bell tower dating from 1790, and several hiking and cycling routes that pass through the municipality. This gives the village different points of interest for a trip to Slovakia: details of cultural history, rural experiences and a landscape that can also be understood through its geological formations.

Church and Literary Heritage

The Classicist bell tower of Horné Zahorany dates from 1790 and has a Baroque cupola. The evangelical Classicist church was built between 1808 and 1814. Its more specifically described features include a Classicist altar with four columns. Its central painting depicts Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and was created by E. Putra in 1913. The interior is designed as a hall with a segmental-ended layout and a flat plank ceiling.

The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Ľudovít Kubáni is also important to the cultural history of the village: Horné Zahorany was the birthplace of the Slovak poet, prose writer and dramatist. A memorial plaque with a relief commemorates him on the school building; Kubáni came from the municipality. In this way, architectural history and literary history meet in the village, without its cultural character being limited to a single building.

Water, Highlands and Rock

Horné Zahorany lies on both sides of the Veľký potok, which flows through the municipality, in the southeastern Slovak Ore Mountains. The stream rises in the cadastral territory of Horné Zahorany. The highland also contributes to the distinctive character of the landscape: its relict surface consists of andesite. Landslides created block fields, while oak forests occur only in the northern part of Horné Zahorany. Those interested in the natural foundations of a place will therefore find several clearly distinct landscape features here rather than a generally described hilly landscape.

Hiking and Cycling on Several Routes

The red hiking trail 0805 passes through Horné Zahorany. In addition, a section of the “Cesta muránskej Venuše” route runs from Rimavská Sobota via Nižná Pokoradz through the municipality. These two details describe different ways of incorporating the village into a longer hiking stage: once via a marked red hiking trail and once as part of a named connection.

Horné Zahorany is also listed on several cycling circuits. The “Gotický kostolík v Kraskove” cycling circuit passes through the village, as do “Náučný chodník Drienčanského krasu,” “Magin hrad” and “Hradisko Drieňok.”

Rural Experiences at Rytierov Dvor

The Rytierov Dvor farm is located in the cadastral territory of Horné Zahorany. Experience cooking courses are held there directly on the farm. Fishing is possible on one of the farm’s bodies of water. At Rytierov Dvor, it is also possible to rent a horse for a walk along a path between fallow deer and mouflon. These offerings complement the cultural-historical and landscape impressions with specific activities in an agriculturally shaped setting.
