Kesovce – Landscape, Nature and Culture in the Slovak Hilly Countryside
Accommodation in Kesovce
Kesovce lies on the eastern edge of the Rimavská kotlina basin, at the foot of the eastern part of the Cerová vrchovina mountain range and in the valley of a tributary of the Slaná. The village therefore brings together several types of landscape that define the character of this Slovak destination. The edge of the basin, the mountain foothills and the valley provide Kesovce with a clear landscape framework. Those planning a journey through less urbanised regions will find here a geographically well-defined starting point between the edge of the basin, the mountain foothills and the hilly countryside.
Landscape between Elevations and Woodland Remnants
Kesovce lies at elevations between 183 and 388 metres; the village centre is at 197 metres. The difference between the lowest and highest stated points is therefore 205 metres; the village centre lies only slightly above the lower end of this range. The cadastral area consists predominantly of unforested hilly countryside. Pronounced terraces appear in the west, while remnants of thermophilous Turkey oak forests and oak-hornbeam forests have been preserved in the east. The surroundings therefore do not appear as a uniform area, but as a landscape with clearly differing terrain and vegetation forms.
One of the distinctive natural features to observe around Kesovce is an unusual Italian oak (Quercus virgiliana). A rare narrow-leaved helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia) grows beneath the spreading crown of this Italian oak. The oak thus stands as a notable tree beside a rare plant that occurs directly beneath its crown. Alongside the geological and topographical description, these two details give the landscape a botanical accent without implying the existence of a large natural area.
Historical Traces in the Villagescape
Kesovce has been mentioned in written sources since 1232. A visible trace of its more recent architectural history is the ruins of a Reformed church. It was a single-nave Neoclassical building with a segment-shaped termination of the presbytery and a projecting tower dating from 1859. The presbytery is the chancel at the end of the church nave; here, it had a segment-shaped termination. The ruins are currently abandoned, and the nave has no roof. For visitors, this provides a clear context: this is not a regularly usable church, but a historic building whose present condition is itself part of the village view.
More recent local events also form part of Kesovce’s cultural context. In 2024, Kesovce held a celebration to mark the opening of its bell tower. Detský deň is a traditional event in Kesovce and took place on 3 June 2026. This date is in the past and is not an announced date for a future trip.
