Kociha lies in the south of the Slovak Ore Mountains, in the Rimava Valley. The village combines landscape, sacred architectural history and memories of traditional crafts. If you are looking for a smaller, culture-focused base for your trip to Slovakia, you will encounter specific local stories here rather than a generic list of attractions.

Landscape in the Rimava Valley

The municipality includes a wooded area with game. A mineral spring produces earthy, iron-rich water and is therefore one of Kociha’s distinctive natural features. These two points shape the character of the village in different ways: on the one hand, the municipality refers to wooded areas and game, while on the other, it points to a spring with a clearly described mineral character. This does not imply anything about current use of the spring or any specific services it offers.

The Protestant Church and Its Bell Tower

The late Classical Protestant church is considered Kociha’s only cultural monument. It was built in 1856 and restored around 1910. Later work affected several parts of the building: the roof and façade were reconstructed or repaired in 1995, while the drainage system and interior were reconstructed and repaired in 2009.

Next to the church stands a small wooden bell tower with a folk-style design. Its bells date from 1899 and 1926. Thus, within a clearly defined area, the village conveys several phases of construction and preservation: the building of the church in the 19th century, its restoration around 1910, and the documented work carried out in 1995 and 2009. For visitors interested in culture, this context provides a clear focal point within the village, without implying anything about current opening hours or regular viewing opportunities.

Glass, Cooperage and Local Tradition

Another historical connection leads to the Kocížská dolina valley. In 1787, there was a glassworks there producing hollow glass and painted glass. In the 1870s and 1880s, the two folk painters Anton Dostal and Ján Roháč worked in Kociha. They produced large quantities of painted glass pictures. The historic municipal symbol also refers to a local tradition of cooperage.

The origin of the village name is also part of local tradition: according to oral tradition, it is said to derive from a woman named Kociha and a castle that is believed to have stood on Žiavec Hill. The cautious wording of this story remains part of its significance as a local legend, not as verified architectural history.

Memorial Sites and Historic Routes

Kociha has a monument commemorating the residents murdered during the Slovak National Uprising. During the Slovak National Uprising, seven residents of Kociha were murdered. The SNP – Bojisko Rimavská Baňa educational trail also includes fighting that took place in Kociha’s cadastral area. The Cesta SNP route passes through Kociha and connects Rimavská Sobota with Rimavská Baňa.

For your travel planning, this provides different historical perspectives: the church and bell tower represent architectural and craft history, while the monument and routes recall the events of the Slovak National Uprising. Horse riding was also part of the accompanying program at Kociha Municipal Day in 2022. This reference describes that event’s program and does not indicate a current offering.
