Bátka: Reformed Church, Manor House and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Bátka
Bátka between Church History and Cycling Route
Bátka combines a local history visibly shaped by the Reformed Church with historic buildings, agricultural traditions and concrete opportunities for cycling and fishing. Local sights include the 18th-century Reformed church. This cultural profile is complemented by a Neoclassical manor house.
A Place with a Divided Settlement History
The original settlement of Bátka was located on the right bank of the Balog and later divided into Dolná Bátka, Horná Bátka and Stredná Bátka. Dolná Bátka and Horná Bátka had grown into a single built-up settlement by the middle of the 19th century. In 1906, they were united into one village. This development explains why the local history is closely connected with several settlement names and a long history of civic development.
Dolná Bátka and part of Gemer became a centre of the Reformed Church. Important church events of the Reformed Church were held there in the 19th century. The village’s linguistic and occupational history has also been documented: during the first 20 years of Czechoslovakia after the First World War, Bátka remained predominantly Hungarian-speaking, while the inhabitants were mainly engaged in agriculture.
Reformed Church and Manor House
The Reformed church in Bátka is an originally Classicist sacred building, first mentioned as early as 1808 and rebuilt in 1908. The façade is notable for its tower, highlighted like a risalit and topped with a pyramidal roof. Semicircular windows and pilaster-strip articulation—that is, vertical division by shallow wall projections—shape its appearance. The church is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
A second historic landmark is the Neoclassical manor house, built in 1895 on older foundations. The single-storey, two-wing building has a U-shaped layout and side wings. Remains of a park have been preserved around the manor house; the park was partly destroyed by village development. Thus, Bátka features not only ecclesiastical but also aristocratic architectural forms side by side.
The Balog, Agriculture and Activities
The landscape around the Balog is also linked to the history of the village. The land on the left bank of the Balog stream was historically used by the inhabitants of Bátka from spring until late autumn as pasture for their animals. Agriculture and fruit growing are among the local traditions and are considered assets for potential tourism development. They complement the historic evidence with an insight into the village’s economic character.
The published BRM600 Poiplie x Gemer x Hont cycling route passes through Bátka. Another activity is centred on the VN Bátka reservoir near Bátka. It is one of the waters most frequently visited by anglers in the Rimavská Sobota area. MsO SRZ Rimavská Sobota offers its members extensive fishing opportunities in carp, trout and grayling waters; the VN Bátka reservoir is also part of this range of fishing waters. This makes it possible to consider historic sightseeing, a designated cycling route and a documented fishing location as distinct areas of interest.
