Rimavské Janovce combines a protected historic townscape with churches, kúrias and an inclusion in the Gotická cesta tourist route. If you are looking for a culturally oriented destination for your trip to Slovakia, its particular appeal lies in the density of its preserved architectural forms: in the historic centre, sacred buildings and older houses form a clearly recognisable ensemble.

Historic Centre and Significant Churches

The historic centre of Rimavské Janovce was declared a heritage zone in 1994. Its linear street development forms a small central square where the Roman Catholic and Calvinist churches are located. Some houses have preserved original stucco decorations from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Church of St John the Baptist is a single-nave building dating from around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, with a semicircular apse. It is originally Romanesque and was formerly a Benedictine monastery church. The former Benedictine monastery stood on the northern side of the church; this historical function is part of the ensemble’s classification and does not indicate current monastic use.

The Reformed Church is originally Gothic and dates from the early 14th century. Inside, it has a flat wooden coffered ceiling from 1792. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. A cultural-historical tour can therefore encompass two different ecclesiastical traditions and several building periods in a closely connected local setting.

Kúrias and Historic Architecture

The secular buildings include the Törökovská kúria, a single-storey late Baroque building from 1800. Its rectangular floor plan, mansard roof and side pavilions define its characteristic form. Another kúria at house number 47 was built in the second half of the 19th century. The late Classicist, single-storey, two-wing building also has a rectangular floor plan, but a hipped roof. Comparing the two buildings makes the chronological shift between late Baroque and late Classicism visible.

Connections, Cycle Paths and Excursion Destinations

Rimavské Janovce is connected to Rimavská Sobota by road II/531 and a railway line for passenger and freight trains. For orientation when travelling there, both a road connection and an existing rail connection are documented. The Kurinec Reservoir is a tourist attraction and is connected to Rimavské Janovce by a cycle path.

Another cycle connection is described as the planned Močiar–Rimavské Janovce route. It is intended to run separately from the main road and thus not be endangered by passenger cars and lorries. A length of 1,519.69 metres is planned. The route is intended to begin at a bridge in the Močiar settlement, run along an existing unpaved field track and the embankment on the Rimava, and connect to the road at a level crossing in Rimavské Janovce. This information refers to the planned project and not to a route that has already been completed.

The area’s geothermal history is also documented: a geothermal spring discovered in 2000 in the cadastral area of Rimavské Janovce is currently used in the Kurinec–Zelená voda recreational area. Thus, the cycle connection, waterscape and historic architecture complement the cultural orientation provided by the town, without this implying any particular accommodation location or current offering.
