Babiná: historic village structure and landscape
Babiná between historic village structure and landscape
The Babiná heritage conservation zone was designated on 25 September 2000. Its character lies not only in its protected status: the historic zone has an organic, grouped street-settlement structure with an irregular layout. The townscape therefore highlights both the course of the streets and the grouping of the buildings. Panoramic views open up from the protected zone, complemented by the surrounding landscape of the Štiavnické vrchy. If you would like to get to know a place not only through individual sights but also through its evolved structure, this historic part of the village provides the thematic starting point for finding your way around Babiná.
Folk farmhouse, church and early history
A particularly tangible testimony to the local architectural history is the folk farmhouse in Babiná. It was built in 1820 and has a U-shaped floor plan. The agricultural buildings added later include a granary, stables and a barn. Within this complex, the granary, stables and barn represent different agricultural functions. This makes it possible to view the farmstead not merely as a single historic building, but as a structural unit with different functions.
The Roman Catholic Romanesque Church of St. Matthew is also part of the area's historic character. It was built between 1242 and 1254. The church contains a Romanesque stone baptismal font from the 13th century. There is also a Gothic bell from 1358 with a Gothic inscription. The dates mark several historical layers: the church dates from the 13th century, the bell from the 14th century, while the archaeological site reaches back even further into the later prehistory. The Pod múrom archaeological site adds ceramic fragments and bronze objects from the later prehistory to this chronological framework. Thus, in Babiná, architectural evidence from the Middle Ages, rural architecture and significantly older archaeological finds come together.
Hiking and cycling around Babiná
There are also clearly named points of reference for finding your way through the landscape. The centre of Babiná is a junction of hiking trails, particularly the Rudná magistrála. The traditional “Chotárom obce” hiking march takes place every year and leads via forest paths and meadows to remote parts of the Babiná municipal area. Its route therefore makes different landscape areas within the municipal territory visible, without implying that it is a single circular trail.
For cyclists, a wooden information board next to the central children's playground shows the entire cycling network of the PK microregion. This network comprises three routes in green, blue and yellow. Together, the three cycling routes are 36.30 kilometres long and connect the municipalities of the microregion. For travel planning, this documents above all the choice between several colour-coded connections; it does not describe specific route profiles or current conditions.
