Breziny – Dobrá Niva Reservoir and Hilly Landscape

Breziny combines a location on the Neresnica River with a hilly landscape, geological features and the Dobrá Niva Reservoir. Reservoir, river and landscape

Breziny lies on the Neresnica River, before it enters the Javorie Mountains. The Dobrá Niva Reservoir extends across the cadastral territories of Breziny and Dobrá Niva. This makes the body of water one of the defining named landscape features of the area, without its location being equated with any particular accommodation or specific leisure activity.

The Dobrá Niva Reservoir is designated as a carp fishing water; its fishing district number is 3-5010-1-1. This designation describes the water's classification. Those wishing to explore Breziny objectively will also find a specific access point: the access road from Breziny leads near the dam to a wooden pavilion at the Dobrá Niva Reservoir. The pavilion has a swing, seating and barbecue facilities.

Geographically, Breziny is located in the northeastern part of the Pliešovská kotlina Basin. The hilly landscape there consists of andesite and its tuffs; in the western part, it also features a basalt flow. These rocks give the surrounding area a distinctly geological character. In the Homôlka quarry, garnet-bearing andesite occurs in large quantities at an elevation of 503 metres. The quarry area also contains a reddish-brown garnet mineral in smaller and larger oval formations.

Nature observation and regional features

The wildlife is also described in terms of specific species. Tree frogs, green lizards, slow worms and owls, as well as numerous common bird and insect species, occur in the Breziny area. The list does not promise that any particular species will be seen, but it does show which natural features belong to the landscape.

The region's historical depth is also significant for understanding it: in the 12th century, the major trade route Via magna ran through the Breziny area. Celebrations marking the anniversary of the village's founding are also held in Breziny every ten years.

The “Deň obce Breziny” festival was scheduled to take place on 24 August 2024 in the car park in front of the cultural centre in Breziny. The second edition was scheduled to take place on 18 June 2022 from 2 p.m. in front of the municipal office in Breziny; both details refer to past plans from the years stated. Another named cultural site is the Dobronivá Castle Ruins in Podzámčok, which is a cultural monument.

Breziny can therefore be viewed from several perspectives: through the Neresnica River and the reservoir, through the rocks of Homôlka, through the animal species described, or through historical traces such as the Via magna.
