Hronská Breznica between the Hron Valley and the Štiavnické vrchy
Accommodation in Hronská Breznica
Hronská Breznica lies in the Hron Valley on the river’s left bank, in the Štiavnické vrchy at an elevation of 275 metres. The village combines a river landscape, volcanically shaped mountains and a clearly discernible history of settlement and transport. The changing landscape is particularly interesting when planning your trip: the terrain stretches from the Hron Valley at 275 metres to Jaseňový vrch at an elevation of 765 metres.
Between the Hron Valley, Rocks and Mountain Forest
Demian rises above Hronská Breznica. It can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail and offers views of towns and settlements in the Kremnica Mountains as well as of the Hron Valley. The Demian Rocks also contain a natural rock window, making the area’s rocky character visible.
The waterways and riverside zones also shape the landscape. The Jasenica stream has a natural streambed and preserved bank vegetation. Stands of alder, willow and poplar grow along the Hron; the area is home to several species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and waterfowl. The Štiavnické vrchy around Hronská Breznica consist, among other materials, of andesitic pyroclastics and other volcanic rocks. The mountain range was formed by volcanic activity.
Another connection with nature is the Pralesy Slovenska – Demian nature reserve. It is one of the numerous parts of the Pralesy Slovenska protected area designated in 2022 and protects a remnant of primeval forest on Demian’s northeastern slopes, east of Hronská Breznica on the northern edge of the Štiavnické vrchy.
Village Character and History
Hronská Breznica was laid out as a linear roadside settlement. The early houses were built of wood, while later houses were made of clay and stone. The village character also includes the bell tower, built in 1905. On the road towards Banská Štiavnica stands a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a folk-art work from the 19th century.
The connection with the surrounding area is also reflected in the history of transport. On 10 August 1873, service began on the narrow-gauge railway between Hronská Breznica and Banská Štiavnica stations. The older economic history includes charcoal production: in the past, the residents of Hronská Breznica produced charcoal and supplied it to nearby ironworks.
Archaeological and mining evidence adds to this picture. A bronze spearhead found on the rocky slope of Bučan, together with a leaf-shaped spearhead from an unknown find site, has been dated to around 700 BC. The mine gallery beneath Mertanec was approximately 500 metres long; its entrance was filled in during the construction of Trate mládeže.
Two Different Routes into the Landscape
There are two described access routes to the nature trail: you can take the bus to the Hronská Breznica, otočka stop or take the train to Hronská Dúbrava. From there, a 1.2-kilometre yellow-marked hiking trail leads south and east above the Hron. The route to Demian is distinguished by its green markings.
