Podzámčok combines distinctive reminders of the past with a regional culture that is still carefully maintained today. The ruins of Dobronivá Castle recall a medieval watch fortress, while the Church of St. John the Baptist and a wooden bell tower stand in the centre, and folklore groups convey dances, songs, customs and traditional costumes from the village. In addition, there is a landscape that stretches from the Neresnica Valley to the beech forests on the western ridges of Javorie. The ruins of Dobronivá Castle

The ruins of Dobronivá Castle probably originated after the Tatar invasion in the second half of the 13th century. The fortification served as a watch fortress on an old trade route south of Zvolen. Its significance therefore lies not only in the surviving ruins, but also in the traditional connection between the castle, the trade route and regional history.

To visit the site, a short, unmarked 500-metre path leads from the end of a road to the ruins. If you plan to visit this place, the lack of signage is just as relevant for orientation as the length of the path. The grounds of Dobronivá Castle also contain a recreational area with benches, a fire pit and an information board. The ruins can thus be combined with time spent at a place that explicitly also provides facilities for a break.

Church and bell tower in the centre

The Church of St. John the Baptist stands on a hill in the centre of Podzámčok. It was consecrated on 16 November 2002. The wooden bell tower of Podzámčok is located near the church on a hill and was built in 1868. Together, the two sites make the village centre an important reference point for visitors who want to discover Podzámčok not only through its landscape, but also through its visible sacred buildings.

The bell tower contains a rare late Baroque bell from 1782. It is the work of the Banská Bystrica bell founder Ján Juraj Knobloch. The tower therefore preserves a specific testament to the region’s craft and ecclesiastical history, dating clearly from before the construction of the wooden tower.

Folklore as part of the local character

The “Na sv. Jána” folklore festival has regional significance and preserves folk traditions and customs. For 2026, it was announced as the 29th edition. At the festival on 20 June 2026, the programme included performances by children from Podzámčok and the Podzámočan folklore group, as well as a bonfire. This information refers to the 2026 date and not to a general promise of future events.

Every year, the Podzámočan folklore group prepares programmes in which it conveys dances, songs, customs and traditions from Podzámčok. It preserves original songs from the village and presents local traditions and costumes in themed programmes. The group also presented the “Podzámocká svadba” programme at a nationwide showcase of village folklore in Likavka. For those interested in culture, Podzámčok is therefore not only a place with historic buildings, but also a setting where local traditions are passed on in various forms.

From the Neresnica Valley to the ridges of Javorie

The western part of the municipality of Podzámčok extends into the Neresnica Valley. There are beech forests on the western ridges of Javorie. These two landscape features complement the cultural sites with a natural perspective: the destination can be understood both through its architectural and local history and through the transition between the valley and the wooded heights. This creates a clear contrast between the historic path to the castle, the hill with the church and bell tower, and the landscape in the western part of the municipality.
