Sielnica Between Basin Landscape and Mountains

Sielnica lies in the northwestern part of the Zvolen Basin, in the valley of the Sielnica stream. The eastern foothills of the Kremnica Mountains shape the landscape around the village; the forests are home to firs, oaks and beeches, among other trees. As a result, Sielnica combines a clearly identifiable landscape with cultural and historical traces spanning several centuries. Forest Areas, Protected Landscape and Trails

The Mláčky Site of Community Importance, code SKUEV0186, partially overlaps the cadastral area of Sielnica. Mláčky is part of the Natura 2000 network and is subject to the second and fifth levels of protection. This classification is an important distinction between a generally forested landscape and an area with an explicitly designated protection status.

The wooded Sielnické vrchy hills are largely accessible. Several routes feature marked trails for different types of hiking. One specific trail is route 5500M: the marked hiking trail connects Sielnica with the spa town of Kováčová. The also-marked hiking trail 8508 leads from Sielnica via Veľký Son to Danielová and is listed as being 9 kilometres long.

Various routes have also been documented for cycling. The route of the “Spoznajme sa na bicykli” event is approximately 35 kilometres long, runs mostly on level terrain and includes gentle climbs. It is suitable for trekking and mountain bikes, as well as for families with children. Another cycling route leads from Sielnica to Skalka via Brestová and then Tri Kríže. It runs along paved roads as well as field and forest tracks and is more suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. The two descriptions therefore differ both in the character of the route and in the stated route details.

Historical Traces in the Village and Above Sielnica

Sielnica was first mentioned in writing in 1250. Traditional settlement architecture includes stone three-room houses. A manor house built between 1780 and 1790 for the administrator of the chapter estate combines Renaissance and Baroque forms. The manor house also contains a unique historic library belonging to the noble Ostrolúcky family from Ostrá Lúka.

The Church of the Holy Spirit was built in 1942 and incorporates the tower of a Gothic church dating from 1397. A Renaissance fortification was built around the church in 1630. Part of the wall, with a simple rectangular embrasure, has been preserved. Another historical trace is a chapel built in 1912. Above Sielnica, on Mount Žiar, lies the Sklenný zámok archaeological site, which is listed in the state register of cultural monuments of Slovakia.
