Tatranska Kotlina: Belianska Cave and Nature Trails

Tatranská Kotlina combines an impressive cave with nature trails, marked hiking paths and a designated mountain bike route. If you are looking for a place for your trip to Slovakia where nature experiences, regional history and different types of activities can be combined, the settlement offers several clearly distinct ways to plan your day.

A special experience at Belianska Cave

The sightseeing route through Belianska Cave is 1,370 m long, has an elevation difference of 125 m and includes 874 steps; it takes approximately 70 minutes. The stated duration is only an approximate guide. The cave is known for its rich deposits of calcite sinter, meaning that in addition to the route itself, the geological formations become a defining feature of the visit. Calcite sinter formations are mineral deposits that form in caves and become visible there.

A nature trail with six stations leads to the cave from Tatranská Kotlina. Its content focuses mainly on geology and speleology. For orientation on site, it is also noted that Belianska Cave is 15 minutes from the car park in Tatranská Kotlina.

Hiking trails to Chata Plesnivec

One specific hiking option starts at the Čarda bus stop in Tatranská Kotlina: the green-marked trail leads to Chata Plesnivec in approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. The stated duration should be understood as an approximate time. Chata Plesnivec is the only mountain hut in the Belianske Tatras. On the ground floor, the kitchen and dining room offer hot and cold meals, drinks and souvenirs.

Another point of orientation is the forest nature trail on Cesta slobody between Tatranská Kotlina and Tatranská Lomnica, near a bus stop. It covers the history of the local forests and technical monuments related to forestry. This gives the trail a different focus from the nature trail to Belianska Cave, which deals mainly with geology and speleology.

A challenging mountain biking route

There is also a specific route for cycling. Cycling route 5897 starts at the Čarda stop in Tatranská Kotlina and initially passes by the Fľak nature trail. It is 6.8 km long, has an elevation difference of 546 m and is rated “Expert – difficult” for mountain biking. The surface consists of forest roads, gravel and partly rocky terrain. The green-marked trail to Chata Plesnivec and cycling route 5897 both start at the Čarda stop; one leads on foot to the hut, while the other is rated for mountain biking.

History and practical orientation

The development of the settlement of Tatranská Kotlina began in 1882, after Belianska Cave had been discovered in 1881. A year-round shuttle service operates in both directions, bringing passengers closer to hiking trails, sights and connections to public transport.
