Štrbské Pleso: Mountain Lake, Nature Trails and Winter Sports

Štrbské Pleso combines a striking mountain lake with nature trails, winter sports and a well-documented history of the High Tatras. Štrbské pleso is the second-largest mountain lake in the Slovak part of the High Tatras. At the same time, Štrbské Pleso is part of Tatra National Park (TANAP), the oldest national park in Slovakia. The nature trail is accessible and open year-round, so visiting is not limited to a particular season. The historical landscape features include the Jazierka lásky. They were originally known as Štrbské rybníky and were used by Jozef Szentiványi to breed trout. The Skokanské mostíky provide a further insight into the history of sport. They acquired their present form during preparations for the 1970 World Championships in skiing.

Nature Trails with Different Focal Points

The nature trail from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso and back has 14 stations. It provides information about the area's plant and animal species, as well as the formation of the Tatras and their geology. The route begins in Štrbské Pleso and remains open in winter. When there is snow, hikers are redirected to a winter route. Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing and Ski Touring

For winter sports, the Štrbské Pleso ski area offers nine kilometres of easy, gentle descents as well as intermediate slopes. The cross-country skiing area near Štrbské Pleso has eight trails ranging from 1.4 to 5 kilometres in length. It also offers a visitor tent, a buffet, a ski school, ski service and ski rental. A 100-metre-long snow tubing track is available as an additional winter activity. A ski touring route begins at the bottom station of the chairlift to Solisko. It follows yellow markings to the foot of the Skok waterfall. This precise route distinguishes the ski tour from the marked nature and cross-country skiing trails in the area.

Štrbské Pleso can be reached via a nearby exit from the D1 motorway. For travel by public transport, the Tatra Electric Railway connects Poprad Tatry, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso.
