Horný Smokovec is a starting point for hikes and can serve as a base for accommodation. The locality combines practical orientation with a multifaceted local history: you can choose easy trails, plan your arrival by the Tatranská elektrická železnica and discover historical traces of the settlement. When choosing your accommodation, it therefore matters whether you are primarily looking for a starting point for walks or also want to combine your stay with railway and cultural topics.

Hiking and walking trails around Horný Smokovec

The VT17 Okolo Smokovcov trail is considered an easy walking trail with little elevation gain. If you like to structure your daily plans around different types of trails, you can consider this walking trail as a separate option alongside other hiking plans.

This distinction is also useful when choosing accommodation: Horný Smokovec can be classified as a base for hikes, while the specific travel plan depends on which trails and cultural destinations you want to combine. This leaves room for an active day as well as a slower exploration of the local history.

TEŽ and a place with a railway tradition

Horný Smokovec is a stop on the Tatranská elektrická železnica, or TEŽ for short. The railway is therefore a named point of reference in the locality. If you want to plan your trip around an existing railway connection, you can take this stop into account when choosing the locality.

The railway tradition also includes the Meniareň prúdu Horný Smokovec traction current substation. It is located on the north side of the railway line in Horný Smokovec, has been designated a cultural monument since 2010 and is still used today as a TEŽ traction current substation. For visitors interested in cultural history, it is therefore a named example of the locality’s technical infrastructure.

Architecture and history of the settlement

The building ensemble was designated as the new Horný Smokovec settlement in 1930. In the 1930s, the larger Helios guesthouse and two well-equipped climatotherapeutic sanatoriums were also built here: the Dr. Jána Opatrného Sanatorium from 1930 and the Dr. Júliusa Holzmanna-Horného Sanatorium from 1935. Both now serve as children’s treatment clinics.

An older historical reference leads back to the 1870s. In the western part of the present-day Horný Smokovec settlement, in an area called Pekná vyhliadka, there was at that time a wooden observation tower and a popular walking trail leading to it. This historical reference adds an early form of recreation and seeking out viewpoints to the more recent architectural and railway references.

Further interests for travel planning

If you are planning to cycle or need equipment for various outdoor activities in addition to hiking, the Intersport GALFY Horný Smokovec branch rents bicycles, e-bikes, outdoor equipment, as well as ski touring and ski equipment. This allows you to align your choice of travel equipment with the planned activities.

The Tatranská galéria offers a cultural perspective. It displays works by important painters inspired by the beauty of the Tatras. This complements the historical information about the settlement and railway with an approach through art and the perception of the landscape.

Accommodation in Horný Smokovec is therefore particularly suited to your travel plans if you want to include hikes, an easy walking trail, the TEŽ and cultural-historical topics in your selection. For further destinations in Slovakia, you can also continue exploring Starý Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso, Tatranska Lomnica, Tatranska Kotlina and Tatranská Polianka.
