Tatranska Lomnica between the ski resort and the High Tatras

Tatranska Lomnica combines distinctive mountain railways, winter sports and excursions into the landscape of the High Tatras. Here, you can travel from the ski resort to high-altitude viewpoints, explore a mountain lake on foot or discover nature and regional history in one place. Families also have dedicated attractions: the Tatrabob alpine coaster is almost 500 metres long and suitable for children and adults.

Mountain railways and winter sports at Lomnické sedlo

The Tatranská Lomnica ski resort offers a range of different areas. The lower section has blue runs for beginners, while the middle section near the Štart transfer station is designed for advanced skiers. A significantly more challenging option is the black run from Lomnické sedlo, with an elevation difference of 1,300 metres. A 6.5-kilometre-long, up to 60-metre-wide route is available for carving.

The mountain railways provide access to several clearly distinct elevations. From Tatranská Lomnica, a ride via Štart leads to Skalnaté pleso at an altitude of 1,751 metres. The onward journey to Lomnické sedlo also runs via Štart and Skalnaté pleso, reaching 2,190 metres. From Skalnaté pleso to Lomnický štít, a red, 14-seat aerial tramway takes you up 855 metres in 8.5 minutes. Lomnický štít is the second-highest peak in the High Tatras and a destination for a family outing.

Hiking trails, mountain lake and nature

A green-marked hiking trail connects Tatranská Lomnica with Skalnaté pleso. Walks and hikes are possible around the mountain lake. A green-marked trail also leads from Lomnické sedlo to Veľká Lomnická veža, a viewpoint at an altitude of 2,215 metres. Thanks to the chairlift, this viewpoint is also easily accessible for families with children. At Lomnické sedlo, views open up over the Poprad Basin and the distant peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains.

Closer to the town, the Pramenisko educational trail begins at the botanical garden. The circular route leads back to Tatranská Lomnica and can be completed on foot in less than two hours. Five information panels and two viewing platforms direct attention to a montane floodplain forest. The Expozícia tatranskej prírody itself is a 3.2-hectare botanical garden with rare and endangered plants and trees of the Tatras.

At Skalnaté pleso, the nearby Svištia skala is located directly below the cable car. The facility features a marmot-like structure, a slide and a tunnel. It therefore provides a distinctive attraction alongside the mountain railways and hiking trails. Those wishing to combine nature and contemporary art can visit Galéria Encián at the same lake. It offers young artists free exhibition space for sculpture, wood carving, photography and painting.

Natural and cultural history on site

The Múzeum TANAP-u in Tatranská Lomnica presents the nature and history of the High Tatras, as well as the former life and culture of the population below the Tatras. The cable car itself is also part of the town's history: its construction from Tatranská Lomnica to Lomnický štít was initiated in 1936 at the instigation of Juraj Orságh, director of the Tatranská Lomnica State Spa Facilities; the ceremonial opening took place in 1941. Lomnické sedlo was also a filming location for the 1970 Slovak film “Medená veža”.

Another historical landmark is the Lomnica Hotel. It was built in 1893 and, in the following decade, was the largest and best-constructed building in the High Tatras.
