Liptovsky Mikulas: Culture, History and Háj Flow

History in the synagogue and museum

The synagogue in Liptovský Mikuláš was built between 1842 and 1846 as a single-storey Neoclassical building. Following a reconstruction in 1906, it acquired its present appearance. The synagogue has been open to the public since 1991 and houses an exhibition on the history of the local Jewish community. The Mosty-Gesharim concert is also held there every year. The building thus combines historical context with a cultural venue that is still in use today.

Since its foundation in 1955, the Múzeum Janka Kráľa has documented the history of Liptovský Mikuláš and made it accessible to the public. It is therefore a suitable place to start if you want to understand the town not only through individual sights, but also through its historical development.

Art from the 15th to the 19th century

The Liptovská galéria Petra Michala Bohúňa is the third-oldest gallery in Slovakia and manages more than 5,500 works. The exhibition “Pôvod maľby” establishes a particularly clear chronological focus. It presents paintings, icons and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th century. The “Hviezdy galérie” project complements this museum visit with educational activities for children, pupils and adults. The activities can be completed individually and without prior reservation, allowing different age groups to find their own way of engaging with the gallery's collections.

Háj Flow and educational trail

The Háj Flow singletrail in the Háj-Nicovô Forest Park offers an active change of pace. It is the first official singletrail in Liptovský Mikuláš, is approximately 800 metres long and has an elevation difference of 100 metres. The trail is suitable for children as well as experienced trail riders. The ascent follows the official asphalt road Generála P. Kunu. The starting point is at the end of the meadow by the war memorial and is marked by a wooden gate and information signs.

The educational trail “Príroda a krajina okolo nás” offers another form of activity. The route is 1.3 kilometres long, has an elevation difference of 140 metres and features information boards and picnic areas along the way. You can therefore choose between a signposted nature trail with educational stations and the Háj Flow singletrail.

Caves and getting there

The Slovenské múzeum ochrany prírody a jaskyniarstva offers an interactive tour. Visitors get a view into a bear cave, hear sounds from nature and animals, and can try crawling through a cave. This complements the traditional exhibitions with an immediate, hands-on introduction to nature and cave-related topics.
