Rudník – Basketry Culture and Trails through the Myjava Hills

Rudník combines the rural expanses of the Myjava Hills with a culture that has grown out of everyday life in the village. The municipality extends across numerous hamlets and kopanitsas on the slopes and in the valleys of this landscape in the White Carpathians.

Basketry and Local History

A special cultural connection to Rudník is offered by Nevšedné podoby prútia. At this event, visitors can learn about new weaving techniques and tools, find out how willow rods are harvested and prepared, and exchange their own experiences. The subject is not merely a single item on the local program: basketmaking has a long tradition in Rudník. To this day, there is a company there that manufactures and processes willow products.

The village’s former economic structure has also been preserved in diverse forms. Historical occupations in Rudník included blacksmithing, a mill, the production of vegetable oil known as záboje, as well as weaving, embroidery, lace-making, and the manufacture of wooden products. The first written mention of Rudník dates from 1661. Those interested in regional craft traditions will therefore find not just a single theme here, but several traces of local work and production.

Nevšedné podoby prútia is one of Rudník’s most important cultural events. For the 2026 edition, basketry workshops, demonstrations of weaving techniques, a market for basketware, films about basketmaking, an exhibition of basketry, and an accompanying cultural program were announced. Most of the cultural and social events mentioned in this context take place more or less regularly every year. There is also a living willow tunnel in the park next to the cultural center. Especially during the summer months, children use it for playing and as protection from the hot sun.

Educational Trail between Rudník and Poriadie

The NCH Poriadie–Rudník educational trail is 2.284 km long and has three information stations about the nature, fauna, and flora of the Myjava Hills. It begins in the center of Rudník, leads north through the Skalky forest, and ends at Poriadie railway station. From there, the educational trail continues toward Stará Myjava.

Rudník as a Starting Point for Routes and Connections

Cycle routes lead from Rudník to surrounding municipalities and to natural, cultural, and historical monuments. Local roads connect the surrounding municipalities with one another.

Regular bus connections are available to Myjava, Stará Turá, and Vaďovce. Rudník has no operating railway service; the nearest railway stations are in Poriadie and Myjava. Thus, bus connections, Poriadie railway station, and the route of the educational trail are three clearly distinct reference points when planning a stay.
