Brestovec – Nature Trail, Kopanice and White Carpathians

Brestovec combines a traditional Kopanice landscape with paths through forests and meadows. The village has a railway station on the Nové Mesto nad Váhom–Veľká nad Veličkou railway line; the M. R. Štefánik Tunnel in the cadastral area of Brestovec is a technical monument. This makes it a destination where nature experiences, regional history and specific routes are closely interconnected.

Nature Trail and Cycling Route through the Kopanice

The Brestovec–Stará Myjava–Topolecká nature trail is 18.298 km long. The trail has nine information stations focusing on the natural wealth as well as the fauna and flora of the Myjava Hills and the CHKO Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The route therefore offers not only outdoor exercise but also places the landscape in context through its natural habitats.

Another way to explore the surroundings is the blue Brestovec–Stará Myjava cycling route. It is approximately 15 km long, passes through the Kopanice and offers views of the surrounding nature. Further along, the route crosses into the Czech Republic and continues into the Filipovské Valley.

Kopanice Landscape and White Carpathian Forests

The characteristic surroundings of Brestovec consist of scattered settlements, meadows and forests. This Kopanice landscape has retained its traditional character. White Carpathian forests lie in the northern part of the cadastral area. They are home to numerous animal and plant species and are used for tourism and recreation.

Southeast of Brestovec lies the reservoir on the Myjava River. Extensive preserved forest stands are found there. The reservoir is part of the Rieka Myjava Natural Monument and adds another nature-related theme to the forest-dominated landscapes around Brestovec.

Historical Traces and Regional Tradition

Several original vernacular residential and agricultural buildings from the 19th century have been preserved in Brestovec. They represent the region’s traditionally agricultural architectural heritage. The history of tunnel construction is also present in the village: the M. R. Štefánik Tunnel in the cadastral area of Brestovec is 2,987 metres long. At its entrance there is a memorial plaque commemorating the people who died during the construction of the tunnel. The Tunel generála Štefánika is also a technical monument from the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic.

The local tradition includes Stavanie mája, which takes place in Brestovec in spring. An edition was announced for 30 April 2026. Another documented event was the “Futbalové podujatie na Brestovci”, scheduled for July 2023, 2024 and 2025. Both details refer to different points in time and should not be understood as a current events calendar.

Orientation for Your Stay

For travel orientation, Brestovec has a railway station on the Nové Mesto nad Váhom–Veľká nad Veličkou railway line. The multifunctional sports field in the village can also be reserved in advance for individual and team sports. The Poľana observation tower was removed on 17 August 2022; it should therefore not be planned as an existing viewpoint.
