Slovenská Ves – Churches, Nature and Cycling Trails
Accommodation in Slovenská Ves
Slovenská Ves between Spišská Magura and the Poprad Basin
Slovenská Ves combines landscapes, local history and active excursions within a compact thematic area. The village lies in the northwest of the Poprad Basin, on the southern slope of Spišská Magura and in the valley of the Slovenský potok. Its location at a road junction is also important for regional orientation: from here, connections lead to Spišská Stará Ves and Tatranská Kotlina. If you are looking for accommodation in Slovenská Ves, you can therefore choose the village as a starting point for a trip that combines culture, nature and cycling.
Churches, a park and traces of local history
A prominent cultural landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of Očisťovania Panny Márie. It was built in the second half of the 14th century and remodeled in the Baroque style in 1769. Its main altar includes a rare late Gothic Madonna from 1510, from the workshop of Majster Pavol z Levoče. For visitors interested in culture, this links a specific work of art with the village’s history, without requiring the church visit to be treated as a current opening offer.
There is also a protected historic park in the center of Slovenská Ves. Only a remnant of its original planting has survived. The present-day Evangelical church dates from 1906–1908 and was built in the Pseudo-Gothic style according to a design by the architect and entrepreneur József Mitra from Košice. A manor house with ÚZPF number 947/1 is also recorded in Slovenská Ves. Finds of Stone Age stone artifacts from the Late Paleolithic have been recorded at Kamence; an abandoned medieval village also stood there in the 14th to 15th century.
A wooden memorial pavilion in the cemetery bears the names of local people who fell in the First and Second World Wars. Those who prefer to approach a place’s history through several stops will therefore find different points of reference in Slovenská Ves: sacred architecture, a historic park, archaeological traces and a memorial site.
Wet meadows, an educational trail and protected nature
The landscape around Slovenská Ves also offers clear themes for trip planning. Lúka Kúty is a wet, tall-growing meadow habitat on the lower course of the Slovenský potok, east of the agricultural facility. Partly protected as well as protected and endangered plant species occur there, including the rare and endangered marsh helleborine (Epipactis palustris). This place is therefore particularly interesting for nature observation because of its distinctive plant life.
The Belianske lúky Nature Reserve is located in the vicinity of Slovenská Ves. An 800-meter-long educational trail leads through the area and includes seven information panels. At its end, there is a 250-meter-long elevated wooden walkway providing a direct view into the protected area. The final section is not accessible by bicycle. This distinction is relevant for planning your day: those traveling by bicycle should take the transition to the wooden walkway into account, while the educational trail and its information panels focus on natural history. Two sites with beaver populations are also located in the cadastral area of Slovenská Ves.
Cycling and winter sports as additional travel options
A cycling route that passes through Červený Kláštor continues through Slovenská Ves, Spišská Belá and Kežmarok. This places the village within a longer connection linking several Slovak destinations. The “Okolo Slovenskej Vsi” cycling race was also held in Slovenská Ves, in its 9th edition on June 30, 2025, and in its 10th edition on June 27.
For winter orientation, SKI CENTRUM ĽANDY is part of the local range of activities. The lift there is 400 meters long, overcomes an elevation difference of 120 meters and has a capacity of 300 people per hour.
Slovenská Ves is therefore a destination for travelers who, when looking for accommodation, want to consider not only an overnight stay but also a mix of local history, protected nature, cycling connections and winter activities. For further orientation, you can also compare Spišská Belá, Matiašovce, Lendak, Malý Slavkov, Stara Lesna, Tvarožná, Jezersko and Spišská Stará Ves.
