Lechnica: Cycling, Nature and History

Lechnica combines a striking landscape with unusually clear opportunities for active days and a distinctive historical character. The village lies in the valley of the Havka stream at the foot of the Spišská Magura. The Dunajec runs along the edge of Lechnica; parts of Lechnica belong to Pieniny National Park, where the second level of protection applies. River landscape, mountains, protected nature and village culture come together here.

Singletrack trails with varying levels of difficulty

The Lechnica singletrack trails offer mountain biking experiences: the network is 15 kilometres long and lies in the heart of Pieniny National Park. The individual routes differ significantly. GRIFTOF is a 9-kilometre route for families. Together with Å PICA, GRIFTOF runs through coniferous forest and meadows, making the landscape along these two routes a visible part of the ride.

Those looking for a more demanding descent will find a different type of trail in GVIZD. The route is 1.3 kilometres long, described as a challenging downhill trail and aimed at experienced downhill riders. The cycling options in Lechnica therefore cannot be reduced to a single level: the documented routes range from a trail explicitly designated as a family route to a short, demanding downhill descent.

Hiking, winter activities and nature observation

Physical activity is also part of what Lechnica offers visitors beyond mountain biking. Lechnica has renovated hiking trails. In winter, several groomed cross-country ski trails are available. The season therefore changes the way you experience the landscape: while the singletrack trails and hiking paths connect the village with forests, meadows and mountain scenery, the cross-country ski trails shape the sporting opportunities in winter.

Another nature-related attraction is the wild boar enclosure in Lechnica. It adds a direct connection to the animal world to the landscape experience, without limiting the village to a single outdoor activity.

Village history and the patronage of Saint Jodok

Lechnica is a former farming village with preserved elements of folk architecture. This historical character is evident not only in the general village structure but also in the Church of Saint Jodok. The church’s patronage has been documented since 1419 and is so far the only historically documented patronage of this saint in Slovakia.

The present Church of Saint Jodok was built in 1830 after the previous church burned down in 1825. The two years mark a specific sequence in the village’s history: the fire that destroyed the earlier church was followed five years later by the construction of the present church. Together with the preserved elements of folk architecture, this historical connection gives Lechnica a distinct cultural profile alongside its nature and sporting attractions.
