Sečovce: Church Architecture, Remembrance, and City Park

Sečovce is well suited to a stop on a journey where you can explore the town’s history not only through a single building, but across several chronological and cultural layers. A particularly prominent landmark is the Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie church. It was built in the Gothic style in 1494, and its tower is 56 metres high. The church therefore combines a clearly documented construction date with a distinctive architectural feature that dominates the townscape from afar.

The Prícestná socha Piety is also important for understanding the town’s history. This popular stone Baroque statue dates from the 18th century and is listed as a cultural monument. Following its restoration in 1999, a copy was placed in front of the entrance to the Roman Catholic church. This makes it possible to understand the difference between a preserved historic work and the copy displayed in public, without confusing the two.

Another place of remembrance is the Old Jewish Cemetery. It is the only surviving testimony to Sečovce’s once numerous Jewish community. Together with the newly opened Sečovce Town Museum, which presents the town’s history, it broadens the perspective beyond sacred architecture. The museum provides a contemporary focus, while the cemetery points to a community structure that no longer exists today.

On Foot Along Surviving and Vanished Traces

If you would like to explore Sečovce step by step, the Náučný chodník – Stratení susedia educational trail takes you through the town’s streets as a walking route. Its special character lies in combining two forms of remembrance: the trail leads to surviving sites as well as to places where historic buildings once stood before later being demolished. Visible structures and lost traces of buildings thus stand side by side. The educational trail is therefore an independent way to read the town not only through individual sights, but also through its changes over time.

The extensive cellars of the Fischerov kaštieľ, the only surviving testimony to the old manor estate, add another historical layer. These cellars can still be accessed from the cultural centre and the department store. City Park with Historic and More Recent Features

Sečovce City Park was established in 1885 and redesigned in 2025 into its current form. Its history therefore reaches significantly further back than its present-day design. Those wishing to place Sečovce’s development in a chronological context will therefore find information there that connects the older townscape with the more recent redesign.

Information About the Zbehnov Side

With immediate effect, a strict ban applies to the Zbehnov side at the VN Sečovce reservoir: cars may not be driven along or parked on the banks. Vehicles must be left on the upper access road. This rule concerns arriving by car and parking vehicles directly by the water, and should be taken into account when planning a visit to this area.
