Get to know Biel through a distinctive combination: the Sennyey family manor house and its architectural history, the surrounding historic park, and activities such as cycling and fishing. A blueberry farm adds a visit featuring local produce to the mix. If you’re looking for accommodation in Biel, you can decide whether architectural history, outdoor activities or a visit to the orchard will shape your travel plans.

The Sennyey Family Manor House: Architectural History and Exhibitions

The Sennyey family manor house was completed in 1781 in the Baroque style. It was later remodeled into its present-day Rococo-Classicist form. This means the original completion and the later appearance can be viewed as distinct phases in the building’s history. The building is single-storey, U-shaped and has three wings. This layout adds a second perspective to its stylistic history: the remodeling reflects the development of the building’s appearance, while the wings and U-shaped floor plan describe its structural layout. Between 2007 and 2013, the manor house was partially restored as part of the Hungary–Slovakia Cross-border Cooperation Programme. This adds a separate, completed restoration phase to the building’s original construction and later remodeling.

The renovated central section houses a museum that currently features an exhibition about the Sennyey family. The manor house also has a permanent exhibition about the poet Sándor Petőfi. The two exhibitions have different focuses: one centers on the Sennyey family, the other on a literary figure. The manor house is also used for various cultural and social events. If an exhibition or event is the reason for your visit, check current access arrangements and specific dates in advance.

Historic Park, Chapel and Cycling

The historic park covers 3.5 hectares. Its trees include century-old ash and plane trees, as well as other rare species. Alongside the manor house’s architecture, visitors can also take in the historic park and its trees. Nearby is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, a Neo-Gothic building erected in 1854. It originally served as a garden pavilion. Its current designation as a chapel and its former function as a garden pavilion give the building its own history of use, distinct from that of the manor house.

Cycling is also one of the activities in Biel: locals use state and field roads for this purpose. This gives travelers a concrete option if they want to include some exercise alongside architectural history in their travel plans.

Fishing Ponds and Blueberry Farm

Two fishing ponds near the Sennyey family manor house are open year-round. They are stocked with African catfish, carp and trout; day fishing permits can be purchased on site. A fishing trip therefore involves both the fish species and the permits. Check the current fishing conditions and day permit arrangements before you travel.

At Zemplín Blueberries, visitors can taste freshly picked blueberries right in the orchard. The blueberry farm was established in 2012 and grows its berries using environmentally friendly methods. A visit to the orchard also offers insight into how the berries are grown. Blueberry jam is also available; confirm its current availability before your visit.
