Čierna Nad Tisou between Lowland and Railway
Flat lowlands, an unusual railway landscape
Čierna nad Tisou is located in the southeastern part of the East Slovak Lowland. The cadastral territory is flat and is shaped by a feature that clearly distinguishes the town from many other destinations in Slovakia: the cadastral territory contains an internationally important railway transshipment station between Ukraine and Slovakia. At the Čierna nad Tisou–Chop border crossing, a 1435 mm standard gauge and a 1520 mm broad gauge meet. Here, you can clearly see how closely the town’s history is connected with cross-border freight transport and different railway systems.
A place that emerged from railway traffic
Čierna nad Tisou was founded in 1946 to support the exchange of goods between the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia through the construction of a railway transshipment station. During the first construction phase, a wooden railway station was built. The coat of arms also reflects this work-related history: It depicts a locomotive wheel. Anyone interested in transport history, border regions and the development of places along important transport routes will find a clearly identifiable focus here.
Political history and archaeological traces
Čierna nad Tisou was also the venue for a historic political meeting. From 29 July to 1 August 1968, negotiations took place here between Alexander Dubček, Leonid Brezhnev and other leading representatives of the Soviet and Czechoslovak party leadership. A cultural building in Čierna nad Tisou played a historic role in this. The event is part of the town’s political history and can be clearly dated as an event from 1968.
However, the history reaches considerably further back. Settlement traces have been found in the cadastral territory of Čierna nad Tisou. Also recorded are a single bronze armour find from the Late Bronze Age, Hallstatt-period cremation graves and a burial site with horseman graves from the 9th and 10th centuries. These finds and features illustrate various historical periods, without implying that there is a museum or sightseeing site accessible to visitors today.
Sports, events and a route to the Tisza
For active leisure time, residents and visitors can use the multifunctional sports field in Čierna nad Tisou for sporting activities. Options include small-sided football, volleyball, tennis, basketball, nohejbal and badminton. The sports field can be reserved by telephone. In addition, several cultural, social and sporting events are organised in Čierna nad Tisou throughout the year. Thus, alongside the railway and local history, there is also a current setting for various activities and encounters.
A cultural-historical route leads from Čierna nad Tisou to Malé Trakany and crosses the railway line via a pedestrian and cycling overpass. As part of a short loop, it is possible to visit a beach on the Tisza. The route therefore combines historical orientation, exercise and a change of scenery, without losing sight of the flat character of the starting point.
