Vrútky: Hiking, Cycling Routes and Railway Culture

Vrútky combines a distinctive landscape setting with railway history, religious buildings and various routes for hikers and cyclists. The town lies in the northern part of the Turčianska Basin on the left side of the Váh’s floodplain and terrace landscape, at the foot of the Lúčanská section of the Malá Fatra. This brings together a river landscape, proximity to the mountains and a historically shaped townscape in one place.

Hiking and Cycling Around Vrútky

For a short, nearby access to the landscape, the Karvaša a Blahovca educational trail is a good option. It was created by the town of Vrútky in 2021. Those wishing to continue the hike towards the mountains will find routes towards Minčol at the end of Karvaša a Blahovca Street, continuing onwards to Martinské hole.

There are also two cycling options with different routes. The red-marked Turčianska cycle highway leads from Vrútky via Lipovec, Turčianske Kľačany and Sučany, as well as through municipalities at the foot of the Veľká Fatra, to Turčianske Teplice. A yellow-marked cycle route, on the other hand, runs from Vrútky along the banks of the Turiec on a newly built cycle path to Martin. Depending on the desired direction, you can choose either a longer connection through several municipalities or a riverside route to Martin.

The cycling rest area in Vrútky has a shelter, parking spaces and bicycle stands. It also includes charging stations for electric vehicles and e-bikes, a pump and tools for minor bicycle repairs. The municipal outdoor swimming pool offers opportunities for relaxation as well as recreational and sports swimming, adding an activity not focused exclusively on hiking or cycling.

Churches, Synagogue and Railway History

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist was built in 1905 in the Neo-Gothic style and stands on the site of an Early Gothic church. Another Neo-Gothic religious building is the Dr. Martin Luther Evangelical Church, dating from 1903. The Vrútky Synagogue was built in 1910 as a Neolog synagogue and today serves the cultural purposes of the town of Vrútky. Together, these buildings reveal different religious and historical traces of the place.

Vrútky developed into an important railway junction in the second half of the 19th century. The permanent exhibition of the Railway Town of Vrútky presents the town’s historical development from prehistory to the 20th century. It can be visited by prior telephone appointment. The grounds of Výhrevňa Vrútky contain historic railway vehicles and historic railway technology. For the history of the town, the railway is therefore not merely a single exhibit but a separate subject area with historical depth.

The memorial room dedicated to Hana Zelinová commemorates the Slovak writer who was born in Vrútky. On display are her authentic furniture, her desk, a collection of her works published in various world languages and other valuable exhibits. Since 2020, the week-long memorial and hiking programme Memoriál Stopami ukrývaných detí has begun annually in Vrútky in the first half of July.
