Príbovce: Culture and Cycling Routes in the Turčianska kotlina

Príbovce lies in the centre of the Turčianska kotlina on the alluvial fan of the Blatnický potok stream, below its confluence with the Turiec River. Its location by the water is complemented by several documented historical landmarks. Churches and Traces of a Long History

The history of Príbovce dates back to the Bronze Age: a Lusatian urn field bears witness to settlement at the end of this period. The village was also situated on an old historic road from Ponitrie. This connection helps explain the historic character of the village.

Príbovce is home to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Simon and St. Jude. It dates from the 14th century and was built in the Gothic style. It was renovated in the Renaissance style in the 17th century. Its furnishings include a valuable Renaissance bell from 1591. Príbovce also has an Evangelical church, built in 1829 in the Baroque-Classical style. It replaced an older wooden church erected during the period of religious toleration in 1783.

Another historical landmark is a manor house with a round bastion tower near the confluence of the Turiec and Blatnický potok. The locals call it “kaštieľ”. The building was constructed on Renaissance foundations and remodelled at the beginning and towards the end of the 19th century. Throughout its history, it served as a primary school, kindergarten and municipal library, as well as a venue for other educational and social activities. The Achimských water mill is also part of the village’s history. It is the only one of the historic mills in the Turiec region that still stands in Príbovce today.

River Landscape and Protected Areas

The nature around Príbovce is characterised by several designated protected areas. The Turiec National Nature Reserve extends into the municipality. The SKUEV 0382 Turiec and Blatnický potok protected area also extends into the municipality. In addition, the Mokrade Turca wetlands are protected under international conventions.

Cycling on Two Different Routes

Príbovce is crossed by marked and maintained cycling route No. 5427. The Turčianska bicyklová skupina JUS marks and maintains this route; it is 10 km long.

Another option is the Tanková cesta route, which includes Príbovce. It is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes and offers views across the entire Turčianska kotlina. The municipality has a bus stop for both directions approximately in the centre of the village, near the municipal office. Príbovce is well served by regional buses from Martin and by long-distance bus connections.
